MG MGF Technical - Blind as a bat

Have just come back from Rotorua - 500km trip at night in the rain and fog. dark road single lane heaps of B trains. Problem I was I had no depth of vision - down to 70km - passed by everything on the road. It was very scary. If I didnt have to be with a client in court the next day I would have stayed over. Finally was able to hitch a ride for 400km behind a Ford Explorer. Verdict worst headlights of any vehicle I have owned.

Question - my headlights are milky - do I

1. Do I replace the units - with the same - and have them milk over again

2. Do I replace them with trophy lights

3. Do I build in driving lights - these are legal - I would build them into the bumper and they would be adjustable within the unit.

Need some advice

David,
I have had simillar experiences in the wet, in a Subaru as well as the F. It amazes me how fast some Kiwi clowns drive when it is wet, on two lane roads. My Fs lights are not cloudy, but still not the best. Please let me know if you find a way to improve your lights.

(1) is an option, and yes, the lamps will eventually milk over again. It is possible to replace the milked inner lens separately, but the problem is, even when in tip-top condition, the MGF's dipped beam lamps still are not the world's best.
(2) is a non-starter - the MGF Trophy lights are identical to the standard MGF's except for the matt-black trim. Better would be to swap the MGF lamps for the TF's (is this what you really meant?). But you'd also need the TF's front bumper - and then also the rear bumper to make the car look cohesive. Ultimately rather expensive and clumsy solution to the problem.

Option (3) is, I think, the best option, so long as you can get some decent driving lights and integrate them well into the F's front end styling. Quite subtle units (akin to those fitted on the Lotus Elise) have been used to good effect in the lower grille apperature in the past. But as the trouble is with the dipped beam lamps, what advantage is there to fitting lamps that are only used with the main beam lamps?

Thanks Rob - Option 3 plus new lenses seem to be the option. Yes you are right on low beam there is no advantage. The high beam light is, for us here in NZ, a must if we travel out of town - single lane no lighting no clear edges bloody hundreds of corners.

The conditions are not good. In Australia I could travel 500 Km in just under 3 hours in a super fast MGB.

Here it took almost six hours without a stop.

Thanks again for your suggestions

"The conditions are not good..."

Oh come on, you make it sound like you dont like corners. In the rain. At night. With inadequate lighting. Sounds like perfect MG weather to me, but then again maybe I'm just another Kiwi clown. (I've already got the clown car, I guess)

:-D

Growler

I bought some 100W (not for road use) bulbs for the high beam lamps. They make quite a difference on quiet roads.

Brian

Growler - how right you are - its all right for you young bucks but wait until you get old and wrinkly and your bifocals let you down. Us wrinklies do like our fun though even if it doesn't cause our pacemakers to blow a fuse.
