MG MGF Technical - Clean K&N how oftern?

How oftern should the K&N be cleaned?

Steve

In an MGF, if it is a 57i then every year in my experience. Those cold air ducts work, and the evidence of this is the large amount of road debris that clogs up on the filter!!!
Rob Bell

Agree with Rob ... yearly unless you do really low mileage.

And does anyone want my old 57i K&N filter because I'm now ITG'd. So it costs a little more, but far far superior across the power range. If a 57i K&N costs about £80 new, you can have mine (all cleaned up) for £35 buyer collects, but you get a free cup of coffee with it.

Martin,

How does the ITG compare to the K&N ... I'm thinking of switching.

Soundwise, performance and fitting ...

Gaz,

Have to agree with Martin, the big difference for me with the ITG setup v 57i is the pick up across the rev range. I always loved the noise of the K&N but felt that there was a lag at low revs when needing to put my foot down. With the ITG this doesn't happen and the pull through the revs is smoooooth. However, I have to admit to changing the exhaust at the same time and so I can't eliminate this from the equation and therefore also can't comment on the sound ;-) (Phoenix exhaust). Also, can't comment on fitting as Techspeed did this for me as part of bigger upgrade. So, perhaps I should shut up and leave it to Martin to reply !

Sound will be damped as it is a fully enclosed system Gaz. The new airbox is a large 150 mm diameter glass fibre or carbon fiber cylinder with a graded conical air intake which is radiused at either end. The filter sits inside the filter. Fitting is a bit of a fiddle, as some bracketry and hoses have to be re-routed to fit the airbox. Air intake can be from either under the car- ala 57i or from the nearside air vent (enclosed air intake system, so no disadvantages there).

Having only riden in a car so equipped (Dave's) I can't comment on performance, but the perception from the passenger seat is of a far more linear power delivery. If we were to performance test this on a RR (with adequate cold air supply) I reckon that the ultimate power output would be similar to a K&N 57i cone (or similar), but would have a major advantage in the mid range in terms of better torque...

Anybody see the K&N 2 'Forced Induction' kit in the Demontweaks mag that came with the new edition of 'Car'.
Paul

Oh yes indeed I did. I have asked already (as have a few others I gather- LOL). Not yet available for the MGF... but hopefully soon.
Rob Bell

Thanks for all the replies. Seems it is time for cleaning. I have to admit my car seems to have no low down torque.
Steve

For the moment I have just changed to ITG system (box and foam filter). I have changed from the K&N after 4 years of it. My impression now of the K&N is just a bag of noise. The ITG on an f that is otherwise standard is very very good. There is extra smooth torque throughout the range. I can now drive up hills without feeling the need to change down. I can accelerate and overtake without changing down. After some measurements I will be taking on a Janspeed exhaust and cat bypass. If anyone wants my K&N (with its induction roar) please contact me, otherwise I look forward to seeing you all with ITG systems to give your cars that little MG X Power touch.
Martin

Martin,

Think I'm going to make the switch ... like others I've the lag in the low and midrange a little annoying. Although I do like the induction sound of the K&N like you after 2yrs I'm not going to miss it much ... my Janspeed should be fine without it.

Thx guyz.
