MG MGF Technical - Do MGF wheels fit Midgets

A friend with a midget is thinking of fitting MGF wheels obn a midget do thet fit?

I think that the PCD is the same Tom- so why not lend him your spare wheel to try?

The major issue however is the wheel offset which is very unlikely to be the same! This is an important consideration as it'll modify the steering angle. I'd predict that fitting MGF wheels would lead to rather nasty handling characteristics like tramlining and braking instability.

Probably better to get wheels designed for the Midget application (Mike Satur may even be able to help your friend here?)- but try them by all means and prove me wrong!

Cheers for that Rob,

He had measured the PCD and reckon they where the same, but as you say the offset is problably different as the only other cars I know of which the MGF wheels fit okay are the Maestros.

The reason behind is because there are plenty of cheap wheels about.

It's an obvious thought Tom- I had thought about fitting my 1.8i wheels to my old Triumph, just out of interest. Wheel clearance issues however meant it was never going to be practical- that is before even starting to consider wheel offsets!

MGB/TR6/TR7 owners may have more luck however...

Short answer is NO. The PCD of the F is something odd like 98.4 mm and is ONLY shared by the Maestro and Montego. The Midget IIRC is 4 inches. In any event there is no way you can find a tyre both low profile enough and narrow enough to fit under Midget arches. The widest tyre guaranteed to fit all midgets including the square arch models is 165 while the occasional 175 can be got away with. On round arch models the front will be the limiting factor and then you will get contact on full lock.

Dieter, is that the figures for the standard 15" wheels? Do you also have the figures for 16" wheels too?

Cheers

inofficial aftermarket:
7,5 x 16 offset 50 + 25mm distance washer (front)
9 x 16 offset 45 + 25 mm distance washer (rear)

7,5J x 16 offset 20mm
8 x 17 offset 25mm
