MG MGF Technical - Dodgy Engine Conversions
OK the allure of the Darkside is fine...but it can go horribly and utterly wrong! Subtle beautiful upgrades to K series engines...fine! K2000 in an F ...wikid! K series in a midget...excellent idea. various V8 MGR engines in B's fine! MGR Kv6 2.5 in a B, very interesting.... BUT you have just got to hear what end of depravity is expressed from the US and on our MGB BBS Honda engined B's, ...YUUKKK!! "which VW engine is best for a B?" ...Answer NONE OF THEM! "can I put a volvo B23 engine in a B?" ...WHY?????? Buy a bloody Volvo they come with one already fitted! This isnt Darkside..it's sadside!.... ...No I a wrong .....IT'S STATESIDE (screams of the damned in the background) |

Will Munns |
I do agree - but bear in mind that there are far fewer MGR doner vehicles in the states to use... |
Tim Jenner |
A heavy Iron V8 in a sprite, sort of defeats the point doesnt it...Nope Still Yick, definiitely Darkside! I put a TR6 engine in a spitfire years ago..horrible |

Funny thing this - ie what makes a good engine to fit into an MG? What makes it sacrilege? For some reason I think that a K-series in a Midget is a great idea. And an old Rover (Buick) V8 in a B wonderful. Even a KV6 in an F sounds like a good idea. But why not a VAG engine or a Honda lump? Okay, a heavy lump into a small car does go against engineering principles. But a light weight Honda VTEC? I'm with you Neil - but I am not sure why I am cringing...? |
Rob Bell |
Yup I am cringing too Honda engine in a MGR?.....= 216 OOPS!!! so it's probably passable! |

Beautiful Engines I'm afraid. Over one million VTECs sold and not a single one world wide ever developing engine failure. Who can match that? HGF on a VTEC..Not likely. |

>> Over one million VTECs sold and not a single one world wide ever developing engine failure. << Somehow, I doubt that that is true Chris (although Honda would love for us to think this). You could build an engine out of cryptonite, but some clown somewhere would still figure out a way of breaking it ;o) |
Rob Bell |
>> Over one million VTECs sold and not a single one world wide ever developing engine failure. Who can match that? << WRONG! Read the small print, there has never been a failure of the V-TEC unit - this is not saying they have never had a V-TEC engine fail. Don't get me wrong it is an amazing engineering feat, but V-TEC engines are not bomb proof, they suffer from split hoses (particularly in the Civic Type R) and also there was an issue with worn bearings in the early ones (not sure if this has been sorted now). There has even been the occasional HGF... At the end of the day it is an engine, an undeniably well designed and engineered one, but it is still an engine never the less and all engines have failures. Just that the V-TECH mechanism is yet to have one. SF |

I wasn't reading it, it is what I thought Clarkson said on Top Gear last week. Just repeating what i thought I heard. Sorry. |

>> Over one million VTECs sold and not a single one world wide ever developing engine failure. Who can match that? << I'll 3rd that. Passed a Civic Type R one morning in serious trouble with clouds of steam billowing out the bonnet! |
Bob Millar |
>a failure of the V-TEC unit ITYF a warranty claim on the V-TEC unit - so you could view this as proof that if the V-TEC unit dies, it takes out the whole engine ;-) >and also there was an issue with..... Theft, as MEGA would tell you if he wasn't to proud! |
Will Munns |
Bob Steam from the bonnet could be indicative of radiator or hoses failing, not necessarily the engine. Will Excuse my ignorance but what does ITYF stand for, i've led a sheltered life you know. |

I Think You'll Find? |

Thanks Rob |

Oh come on now - be sensible ! What's so wonderful about the engineering of the B ? Why is a Volvo B23 so much worse than a Marina, or a Sherpa van - and Triumphs had tractor engines ! (still loved them though). The only things they really need to worry about are :- does it fit ? Is it a reasonable weight ? Does it rotate the same way as original engine ( ! ) >>>> Over one million VTECs sold and not a single one world wide ever developing engine failure. Who can match that? << This is now folklore ! Doesn't really matter how true it might be. I still fancy trying a miata with a mustang or lexus engine ... |

Or a 214 with Thunderbird 3's engine 5...4...3...2...1 !!!! |

>> Over one million VTECs sold and not a single one world wide ever developing engine failure. << I had a problem around 30K with my Accord Type R ... a rattling just above idle sounding like exhaust baffles ... but appeared to be something to do with camshafts ... the garaged whisked the car away and gave me a loaner for a week, and then I got the 'R' back; at 62K, still as sweet as ever!! So they do go wrong ... but the service I had was excellent (as if they were embarassed about it). Anthony 1.8KMidget |
