MG MGF Technical - Emission problems but running lean

Having problems with my 2001 MGF VVC. The yellow engine light keeps coming on and exhaust analysis indicates presence of unburnt oxygen. I thought the car was fuelling but the opposite is true as the plugs are white. Tappets are quite noisy. Car has done 60,000 miles. Anyone got any ideas? Is it worth saving??

John, what a small world.

I've heard that it could be the start of Coil Packs breaking down, or even Lamda Sensors.

Possibly, your best bet is to try and find somewhere with TestBook facility, which should alleviate the throwing money at it until the problems found.

Good luck.

Even a cheap fault scanner should bring up any fault codes.

Of course its worth saving! As has been mentioned, a fault code reader would be the best way to go, as it would probably tell you what was faulty. If I had to guess on the cause of the orange light and given that you have emission problems, I would say you need a new Lambda sensor. They do fail after a while, I've changed two.
MGF engines, especially VVCs,do seem to get a bit rattly when the engine oil is getting tired. An oil change might solve your noise problem.

John,
It's over a month now, did you have any luck with the problem ?
