MG MGF Technical - Engine Bay temperature

Has anyone experienced an engine bay overtemperature - red light on dash with engine symbol and thermometer. My '96 MGF first registered this 'fault' after motorway driving last week. The dash light remains on even when engine cold. I assumed either Ambient Air Temperature(AAT) sensor fault or engine bay cooling fan fault. On investigating the problem I found the fan runs constantly when ignition switched to position II and red dash light illuminated constantly. Removal of AAT sensor extinguishes warning light (and fan does not run). The AAT sensor has a resistance of 3800 ohms at 10C and resistance drops with increased temperature - ie appears to be working.
The way the manual reads the sensor just routes through the ECU and the ECU switches the engine bay cooling fan on and off as required. Unless anyone has any advice I guess I'll have to find a garage with MGF testbook facilities and get them to interrogate the ECU.
