MG MGF Technical - Engine dies on to low voltage?
Driving to work today, the car start feeling powerles and I just manged to get of the road onto a parkinglot. When trying to restart, it didnt start. I waited for a while (making calls). Then cranked for a while untill it started. I let it Idle(fine) and then carfully drove the last k's to work, this time without the headlight. Now at the work car lot, it cranks fine but starts a little bit late every time. Many possibilities ran through my head, but what do you think of this: I think it is charging but not enough, plausible? (the charging warning is not lit) In April the garage changed the alternator drive belt and tentioner. * Since then it has squeeked when starting and on very low RPM (i.e. wrong gear) * I pushed the belt, and it feels loose (should deflect 8-10mm when pushed with 10kg) * I used the AC alot yesterday, which share the belt. Ive got time with the garage tomorrow morning, if it is tention, i'll insist they'll do it for free. What about this hypothesis? Is it so that the electronics/Ignition etc is more sensitive to low voltage than the starter? |

Maybe the alternator on its way out or even battery giving first warnings it is on its way out and needs replacing soon. Maybe turn the AC to see it it makes any difference, could be AC unit causing problems if it runs of the same belt and cause resitance which is putting a strain on the system. Tom |
