MG MGF Technical - FAO of Rob Bell, re filter heat shield
Rob, i'd be interested in any details you can give regarding the K & N Filter heat shield you have a photo of on your site. |
Paul |
Hi Paul, what you see is what you get- i.e. all it is is a short section of 220 mm diameter aluminium 'foil' ducting just wedged in to isolate the filter from the worst of the radiated engine heat. There are a couple of holes in the wall of the duct to allow the K&N cooling tubes to continue to do their work in supplying cool air to the filter. The idea was that the heat shield would allow the cold air to swirl-circulate around the filter, thus giving the filter cooler ambient air than would necessarily be available. To be quite frank, I didn't expect much from it. A 'give-it-a-go' project, just to see what would happen. I was very surprised- the mid range torque is much better. The next thing I want to do is to fit the plant-pot enclosure that I've had sitting in the boot of my car for the last 6 weeks. This is effectively the prototype to a 'proper' air box that hopefully I'll able to get made- either through Matt Smith or Andy Phillips. Fingers crossed! Summary- if you haven't already fitted some kind of heat shield to your K&N, do so ASAP. It makes a surprising difference! Rob |

Paul, Rob I fitted the plant pot idea to mine just to test not the same as the Elise way but: I large plant pot. A large hole drilled in the side. 1 drain pipe fitted to this and glued in with glue used for plastic drains. Fitted the plant pot over the filter taped the filter at the front to the filters rubber pipe with duck tape. Covered the hole thing with kitchen foil and duck tape. Used string to stop the plant pot moving around. Still on after 4 weeks and many 300 mile trips. (thanks for the tip of disconnectiong the spedo!!!!) Found better low down torgue. Will modify when got time. Sorry no pictures. But very easy to do. Looks crap but is cheap and works |

My flower pot is more like the ones used by the Lotus boys Steve. It comprises of: 1. A flower pot lid. 70 mm hole made in its centre- remove the K&N from the intake tube and slide the lid over the metal filter adapter ring. Reassemble. 2. 200 mm flower pot (Homebase), with 100 mm hole made in the side of it. Route 100 ali duct (Wickes) from near side air vent to the flower pot. Tape up drainage holes with ali tape (Halfords). Pass the flower pot over the filer to the lid, and fix with 3 self tapping screws. Job done... :o) Just haven't had the time to take the engine cover off- and this weekend's weather didn't help! Need a garage!!! :o( |

Rob, The 220 diamter ducting? Is this then cut lengthways and flattened out to form the shield shown in the photo? No fastenings? just wedged in place, has it moved in use? Have you any more photos of the heat shield, if so could you send to the above address if you have chance. Flower Pot lid, is 'a lid for the top of a flower pot'?...*grin*, or a flower pot saucer that you would stand a flowerpot in? I think i might have a go at this. What do you recon are the changes/advantages of this set up specifically. Will it be a lot quieter/too quiet? I've always been an ardent K & N panel filter plus bypass resonator with tube to near side vent person. But i got a cone filter for free from a neighbour so i thought i'd give it a try. To be honest i didn't like the sound on his car, gave me a head ache, but mine has much more additional sound proofing so hope its just right on mine, i wait an see. |

>> The 220 diamter ducting? Is this then cut lengthways and flattened out to form the shield shown in the photo? No fastenings? just wedged in place, has it moved in use? Because the diameter is a 'little' too big to fit in the space available (!) it is slightly squashed under the parcel shelf/ boot shut panel above and engine coolant pipes below. It hasn't moved since I fitted it! I have a digital camera so can take some more /explanatory pictures if you need them. >>Flower Pot lid, is 'a lid for the top of a flower pot'?...*grin*, or a flower pot saucer that you would stand a flowerpot in?<< Shucks- I've been rumbled! LOL Yes, the latter is what I've used. Not sure what effect it'll have on the sound- I guess it'll be a little quieter. A case of try it and see I think Paul. Good luck with it! Rob |
Rob Bell |
Thanks Rob, i think i'm just going to make a 'sock' for now...*grin*. Is the ducting only 220mm (8-9"ish) in diameter, it just looks a little bigger diameter on the photo, perhaps i'm mis-judging the size of the access openning, its a while since i saw mine. |
Paul |
Pretty sure it is 220 mm diameter Paul (I'll check it again). I think it looks bigger in this picture because it is *slightly* squashed to fit into the space available... Incidently, it is as long as it is wide (i.e. about 8" long extended, if you'll forgive the mixed units of measurement!) http://www.mgf.4mg.com/heat_shield.jpg |

Rob I get:- Forbidden Host: [208.185.127.161] ns1.freeservers.com You do not have permission to access http://www.mgf.4mg.com/heat_shield.jpg Data files must be stored on the same site they are linked from. Thank you for using FreeServers When trying to check you 'its as long as it is wide' piccy! Ted |
Ted Newman |
Of course it works fine from my computer- but presumably that's because the image is cached on the hard drive... :o( Try http://www.mgf.4mg.com/air_filter_heat_shield.htm |
Rob Bell |
I would test it here, but for some reason I get a host not found error. If you go to your mgf.4mg.com site and then paste the URL for the heat shield in, it will probably work. Geocities have started to do this now, it stops people putting the graphics on their server and linking to them from other websites. Steve. |

Rob, what was the 210mm ducting used for and where did you get it? I've drawn a blank so far at builder's merchants, plumbing and heating shops and a B & Q warehouse. Largest diameter so far is 125mm, though i've been recommended to try a chimney supplier! as that size might be used as a flue |
Paul |
I am not technical minded so this may be classed as a dumb comment but what about covering the airfilter in a fire blanket? You can get them from camping shops. I think that I am going to play around with this idea as at low revs the car is slow. |
Ashley |
>>210mm ducting used for and where did you get it? try a builders merchants. Used as a flue for gas fires. BTW Ashley, don't forget the filter sucks air in, the shielding needs to be rigid. |
Gareth |
I think it is chimney/ flue pipe Paul as Gareth says- although I have to confess I pilfered mine from a skip!!! There you see, doing my bit for the environment- recycling ;o) |
Rob Bell |
I think the skip itself would make a very adequate heat shield! Ted |
Ted Newman |
LOL Ah... but don't they say "no fires" on most of them! Neil. |
Neil |
my brother got charged for theft for that Rob, better be carefull. Judge went mad at the police tho for wasting his time. |
Gareth |
LMAO - stealing from a skip, what kind of barmy police would take that to court? Steve. |
Steve Childs |
A neighbour reported him - duh! And plod/CPS insisted it went to court, hey that's what your taxes are for. Oh, it was nine old bricks that he took for his BBQ. |
Gareth |
For freeservers & geocities, direct linking to jpgs is sometimes blocked now. Linking via a html file seems OK though. The html link above works OK here. |
Dot |
You didn't see me, riiooghttt?! ;o) |
