MG MGF Technical - Fitting a FPR
Hi, Just wanted to know how easy it is to fit a new fuel pressure regulator (FPR) in an F 1.8 MPi. Yesterday, the juddering problem (http://www.mgtf.be/MY_NI_problem_juddering.html) started again after 5 months trouble free driving. Cheers, |

I did it a few weeks ago. There is a very good guide on Rob's site (as always!) Bit of a bugger getting the old FPR out as the spring clip was really hard to release and it's a really rescricted area. Getting the new FPR in was even harder though. It wont simply slide in. I had to resort to a rubber ring pressed against the FPR with a socket against that and a very long extension bar on top of that. I then had to give the extension bar some (cough) gentle taps with a hammer! Then the spring clip was really hard to re-fit. Put it this way my neighbour came out and laughed at my "colourful" language! Worth it in the end though. Much more responsive and no flat spots. |

Pretty straightforward Erik - as Tim and I found: it only took about 30 minutes to complete :o) I used a re-calibrated standard FPR from Mat Smith - but you can get standard FPRs from your local MGR parts department (I've got the part number at home, and can post it up, assuming someone hasn't beaten me to it! It didn't want to know when the rubber 'O' rings were on the FPR casing - but transfering these back into the fuel rail housing made the job a doddle: the FPR really was just a press fit... |

> the FPR really was just a press fit... A complete nightmare on mine! Tried it with the O Rings on the FPR and in the housing. It just wouldnt press in far enough and I had all my weight pushing against it. It took about 1.5 hours but I already had the engine cover off etc so not including that time. |

Will do on saturday including swap back the exhaust to the Milltek. Bob, do you think a very few grease to the O-rings could improve slipping in the part ? |

Anyway, thanks Bob & Rob. I'll have a search on the website and it's good to know if it doesn't work out easy... it won't be caused by a wrong part, wrong way to do it or a wrong would-be technician. Or at least, let's hope so. |

Has anyone fitted one to a VVC yet? Since fitting a K&N, the engine stutters as if starved of fuel if you suddenly open the throttle from idle. Fine if you open it a bit more gently, and driving seems fine - but it's irritating to know that it happens at all! Tim. |

Someone was attempting this on a TF160 - but as Bob rightly says, this job is a nightmare on any car fitted with the alloy inlet manifold because of access issues :o( It'd be a lot easier with a home made tool to press out both of the spring retainers at the same time as being able to rotate the retainer... Wouldn't be too hard to make? |
