MG MGF Technical - Fuel Tank Recall
I have a 2001 MGF 1.8i which has just come back from my main Rover dealer having had the door handle surround replaced due to bubbling in the paintwork(under warranty) and they informed me that they had done a recall check on the fuel tank campaign No A166. They said it was to check for paint marks on the filler neck and for hydro carbon on the chassis rail, apparently mines ok but having checked the archives couldn't find anything relating to this. Is it a new recall. I'm sure one of you has some knowledge. By the way this BBS is brilliant, I have learnt so much already about the car in the last 2 months of ownership. Thanks to you all. Service Action Bulletin No: AD166 Page 1 of 5 SERVICE ACTION BULLETIN Circulation: X Indicates to whom this information should be circulated Bulletin N o : AD 166 SERVICE MANAGER X SALES MANAGER X Issue: 1 PARTS MANAGER X SERVICE RECEPTION X Date: 11.05.01 WARRANTY MANAGER X WORKSHOP X MODEL/DERIVATIVE: AFFECTED RANGE: MGF All Derivatives RD 522572 to RD 526432 PROBLEM: POSSIBLE LEAKAGE FROM FUEL TANK SEAM WELD CAUSE: Incomplete fuse weld during fuel tank manufacturing process ACTION: · Using a conventional exhaust gas analyser, measure hydrocarbon levels within the enclosed body cavity into which the fuel tank is situated. · This procedure will confirm loss of fuel or vapour from the tank. PROCEDURE: 1. Remove petrol filler cap and check for presence of white or black paint marks on the two bolt heads shown in illustration A. 2. If paint marks are present, no further action is required. However, if there are no paint marks, proceed to item 3. 3. Drive vehicle onto lift, apply handbrake and raise to working height. 4. Making reference to illustration B, locate the two 3 cm diameter holes that are situated on the underbody panel, approximately 34 cms. apart on both sides of the central tunnel section. 5. Making use of an approved exhaust gas analyser that is calibrated in accordance with manufacturers instruction, ensure the atmospheric reading in the workshop for hydrocarbon (HC) levels is between 0 and 5 ppm.Service Action Bulletin No: AD166 Page 2 of 5 6. Once this reading has stabilised within the above range, insert the probe into one of the underbody holes for one minute and record the hydrocarbon readings. Repeat operation on other side of the vehicle. WHILST CONDUCTING THIS TEST PROCEDURE, ENSURE THE READINGS ARE NOT CONTAMINATED BY EXHAUST GASSES FROM OTHER VEHICLES, OR PETROL FUMES WITHIN THE VICINITY. 7. If the HC reading at each hole is less than 100 ppm, no further action is required, therefore lower lift and apply a dab of white paint to both bolt heads shown in illustration A. 8. If either of the HC readings are greater than 100 ppm, replace fuel tank assembly in accordance with procedure 15.55.01 on Rave CD disc VDW 102820 or MGR100080. 9. If it is necessary to replace the fuel tank, use locking ring tool 19-009 (same as Rover 75) when removing / refitting fuel pump. Ensure the fuel pump seal, tank to body packing seals and rear bulkhead seal are replaced during re-assembly. 10.Apply a dab of black paint to both bolt heads shown in illustration A. 11.In instances where it is necessary to replace the fuel tank, please complete the form on page 5 and fax immediately to MG Rover Group Service, on fax number *44 (0)121 4823035. Does anyone have "Illustration A" or can anyone describe the bolts that should have been painted? Is there any other way of checking whether the recall work was done to an MGF? Thanks Chaz |

Dont get a 'bulletin' mixed up with a 'recall'. A bulletin is information to dealers for things to do or check WHEN the car is next in - not normally urgent safety issues A recall is when there is an urgent safety issue and the work MUST be done immediately and the DVLA is involved for list of owners. Chaz, From the description it sounds like the two small bolt heads around the filler hole are the ones in question. Bruce |

Thanks Bruce, Ted. I still think it worth a check, though. My car was a garage's demonstrator in its early life, so I hope they looked after it well and checked this at that time. C |

Demonstrator? That means it was most probably thrashed to within an inch of it's [early] life.. |
