MG MGF Technical - Handling concerns

I've noticed some changes to the handling characteristics of my car over the last couple of weeks.

I've noticed an increase in an "understeering" sensation when cornering. Usually mid bend where I feel a numbness in the steering wheel as though I could move it a few inches left and right and there would be no response from the wheels. The back end feels firm and planted, just this lightness at the front.

On the way to work this morning I went through a roundabout quite briskly with a quick left right left flick and I'm sure I heard and felt a knocking coming from the front.

I'll get the wheels off at the weekend to examine fully but I was looking for some pointers to the problem area to save time. I'm sure it's not the bottom of a damper coming away from the bush as I fitted PU bushes a couple of years ago and put very large washers either side of the bush that meant the damper couldnt slide off it over time.

I had new tyres (Toyo Proxes) fitted a few months ago so it shouldnt be a tyre problem.

Tracking feels fine and the car doesnt wander.

Any thoughts as to where to look first?

Tyre pressures?

All perfect at 30psi all round and checked every week.

Worn track rod ends?

Where will the "wear" show up on them?
Bob Millar

Wheels off the ground, wobble side to side - should show up as a clunk (feel or sound).

OR

Full lock - a little, grab TRE and rotate in hand, it should be obvious if there is much slack.

Tyre pressures?

'All perfect at 30psi all round and checked every week.'

Pressure is high? 2000 car 24 front 28 back according to the handbook.

Very possibly but I run 195/50 R15 all round and I have been using the same tyre pressures since I put the Toyos on and the feeling has only occurred recently despite running 30psi for months
Bob Millar

28-30psi all round is fine Stuart - what tyre pressure you use depends on how you want your car to feel and also depends on the tyres you've fitted to your car! I currently run 28psi all round with Goodyear F1 GS-D3s.
