MG MGF Technical - Headlight cleaning (inside)
I haven't even taken a proper look yet, but can anyone tell me how to remove (if possible) the h/light covers to clean the inner lenses as they seem to be quite filthy and not throwing out much light on dipped beam. thanks Phil. |

Phil, I had this problem with all my F's. What I did was change the bulbs to the xneon type. They are much better and you can actually see the road when dark and wet. Regards Steve |

Thanks for the tip Steve, are they those bulbs that you can see coming towards, flickering blue!!! |

Word of caution regarding some of the xenon bulbs on the market. Not only do they not produce as much light as the standard bulb but they are often of very poor quality. The Halfords all weather bulb (H4 size, costs about 9 quid) seem okay, but be careful as to what you buy. Power rating should be 60/55W. Having said all that, this doesn't really answer Phil's original question! Phil- no the inner lenses are not removeable, although the outermost glass cover is. Whether it is possible to clean the inner lenses I am not sure. A case to tax your ingenuity<sp?> perhaps? |

Phil, As the "headlight modification" requires removing the bumper (painting inside, see Scaret Fever's site for DIY instructions), I think you can follow the same procedure. Fabrice |

I tried out the halfords all weather bulbs in my astra van - result, in a word C*ap. However, i then tried the xenon bulbs, much better. In fact as a good comparison, i recently had a knock involving the front offside. The repairing garage kindly fitted a standard bulb to the offside leaving the xenon on the nearside. The difference is quite noticeable, but i haven't got round to changing it yet! Nick |

Good points concerning the performance, or lack of it from so called performance bulbs. Auto Express did a really comprehensive feature a few months ago on a huge range of available bulbs and the results were clearly quite worrying. The main point is that 'All weather' and other bulbs that have a coating on the glass envelope actually reduces the light output. As Nick says the on road results is crap when you want to illuminate the road. If you live in a traffic jam then the lower intensity of these bulbs is beneficial to other road users who will be less dazzled, unless you are one who (illegally) runs round with the front fog lights on all the time, other than in seriously reduced visibility! I tried the Ring all weather bulbs against the Ring Zenon (Both 60/55 watt) a couple of years ago and soon junked the 'All weather in favour of a pair of Zenon's. If I still have the Auto Express feature I will condense the results and post them. Rog |
