MG MGF Technical - Help! Gear Selection Problem

Arrrrggghhh!!!
Please help me - or shoot me. I've sold my 'F'. Someone's coming to collect it at 7.30. They've already paid for it. I cleaned it all up and took it out for one last run and while accelerating from 4th to 5th, the gearchange went all sloppy and now I can only get 2nd and reverse.
NIGHTMARE!
Any ideas??

Cheers

What do you understand by sloppy?
david.

Check underneath the gearbox: the cables can come loose and all they need is to be clipped back on. The selector arm is pictured here, on Dieter's site: http://www.mgfcar.de/defects/defekter_faltenbalg.jpg

If that's not the problem, then one of the cables has snapped.
Bad timing or what!

Revenge of the MGF (loads of similar stories in the archives LOL - sorry Kieren!)
Rob Bell

The gearstick feels like it's sitting in a bowl of porridge....
And has excessive travel in all directions with no definable gate for selecting the gears

Thanks Rob - If it's just the clips, I'll buy you some pints - When i get the head back on the Rover Convertible!!!
Kieren Gibson

From what I can tell, they seem to be clipped in ok Rob. So I guess A cable must have snapped.
Guess I'll have to try and put them off for a while.

Hmmm, After checking the archives, I'm not so Sure I can tackle this on my own.
Has anyone else (apart from Dieter) managed to do this? Or anyone have any recommendations?

Oooohhhhhh - REALLY confused now - I just wiggled all the gear connectors around under the gearbox to see if I could "sound out" or get a feel for what was wrong, and......I couldn't. BUT...I Went back to see if it made any difference, and now everything seems fine again...How weird is that?!

David,

not necessarily a snapped cable. There is a flat metal plate that keeps one of the two cables in place (see yellow par on drawing)

Thanks very much for that David. They do all seem ok - Maybe they feel to me like there's a little play in the bottom one - but I'm not sure how much there should be.
I have the car back off the ramps, and everything seems ok. Not sure whether to tempt fate and take it for a quick test run, or leave it and hope it holds out for the couple who are picking it up...

How did the hand over go Kieren?
Rob Bell

Kieren, do the prospectives read this bbs?
John Ponting

Rob,
They took it out for a 50 mile drive and when I woke up Yesterday morning I was terrified - It was sitting back on the driveway - luckily, as I woke up I remembered they are away for the weekend and are leaving it with me 'till they get back on Tuesday.

John - AFAIK they don't read this BBS - YET! I guess I'm hoping this thread slips quietly away before they get into it...

Was there names? We'll tell 'em. Cheques made payable to......

:¬))))
Bruce Caldwell

Well Bruce - If ya yell 'em - they may not want the car after all (which wouldn't be such a bad thing. Byt the time they find out though I may have the Rover fixed and they could have that instead. lol.
