MG MGF Technical - Hollow Noise at low revs
Hey ppl. Last night my F developed a new noise! Only seems to be noticable at low revs when accelerationg, and when I turn the ignition off. Sounds like a hollow metal clunky noise, havnt had a chance to look under the car and see if anything is loose yet. It doesnt make a noise when idling, and seems to be ok when driving fast, although im guessing the exhaust might be drowning that out. Any clues to what I should look for? Cheers ppl. |

Hi Edd, did you review the jack? Regards Ed. |

The jack is fastend nice and snug in the front. this is defiantly a noise coming from the back of the car :( |

Hi Edd, My '96 MPi gives what could be described as a faint 'hollow clanging' just in the last fraction of a second as the engine stops spinning - is this the kind of noise you're hearing? Whilst doing an oil change yesterday I knocked against what looked to be a heat shield around something, and got the same noise - looks like it's corroded & separated slightly, allowing it to flap around a bit. Didn't investigate further, but I'll crawl underneath again tomorrow and examine. Your symptoms suggest something that is triggered by the engine twisting slightly on its mounts, which makes me suspect the exhaust or something thereabouts. |

Yeh that does sound similar, im also getting it at low revs, i asked my dad last night and he also reckons it could be the exhaust doin something because the engine mounts may have twisted. We'll be checking it out tommorow. Lets hope it doesnt rain! :) |
