MG MGF Technical - How/does the AIRBOX come out?
Well, I undid all the bolts and disconnected the pipes and got the lid off but somehow just can't get the Airbox out through the top, it seems to be just too big to pass out through. If you read my earlier thread, you will know my 2001 "F" was fitted with the larger Airbox being the same as the "TF" in 2001 on. Iv'e read others have had to physically cut theirs out but I don't want to do this as I want to save the box (changing to K&N 57i). Anyone throw any light on this ? Thanks. |

John Are you talking about the actual filter housing box in the engine bay? or The resonator box in the wheel arch? If the resonator then the answer is 'with difficulty' better to just leave it unless you are thinking of using the left hand inlet for something. If you mean the actual filter box and if this is now much bigger than the original - then I am not sure BUT the earlier models did come out through the top - that is through the engine inspection panel under the hood carpet rather than through the grill opening in the boot. Ted, I don't mean the Resonator box, in fact I don't think I have one ! the only air into the Filter Box is from the induction pipe that rests on the rear cross member and this goes straight into the end of the box and then halfway in again via an extended tube. I can understand that the "smaller" airbox would come out quite easily but mines the "big" one and very deep, presumably like the TF. I think the illustration of it is on Rob Bells site but I dont have the "hole" in the back as shown in his picture.(his picture on the right) Presumably the resonator would have been fitted to that inlet if I had it ? John, I've got a 2001 F with the bigger box or I had before I changed it to an ITG Maxogen filter. It souldn't be a problem, just disconnect everything and take the top off the box and the paper filter out - don't try and remove it complete. Once you've done that push out the plastic clips that connect the box to the metal bracket and pull the air hoses out and the whole thing should lift out with a bit of twisting and turning. If I remember the air hoses are fixed in place with cable ties and you'll need to snip them. |

Meant to say that you'll not have a resinator box with the filter on that year of car. |
David Clelland |
Thanks David for that comment. I did everything you said but no matter how I twisted and turned it it wouldn't come out. Your model sounds to be the same as mine so perhaps I wasn't giving it enough "heave". Thanks also for clarifying that this model doesn't have the resonator box. John |

I would take the engine inspection cover off. In my experience it works out quicker and easier in the long run to remove the cover, do what you need to, and replace it, then it does to spend hours struggling to do things through the 'letterbox' :o) |
Steve White |
John, I assumed that you had taken off the engine cover. It's bad enough with that off - you'll never get it through the "letterbox" |
David Clelland |
Yes I removed the whole engine cover that's why I'm reluctant to do it again unless there was a way of removing it that I was missing ! |
John Mac |
It may require some "brute force and ignorance" John! I presume that the two retaining bolts to the side of the airbox have been removed? Then it is a question of removing the air intake feeds - the rubber one just pops out of the 'box, and the other pulls off. You should then be free just to pull the airbox free of its lower mount. Hope that helps |
Rob Bell |
I think you may be right Rob about the "brute force" bit but I didn't want to damage it. Yes I have unbolted and disconnected everything and can almost turn it horizontal but it seems just too big in any direction to get out through the top. Anyway it seems to be possible from what others have said so I will wait until the Filter arrives and have another attempt. Thanks all. |
John Mac |
I had no problems with getting it out with the inspection cover removed, so yes, I think that this is a job that is best kept until you're ready to install the new filter John :o) |
