MG MGF Technical - How often do you change plugs and oil?

Hi friends,
Rover says the plugs should be changed every 100,000 Km. and the engine oil at every 20,000 Km service. Okay about the oil I guess (yet, I change it every 10,000 Km, it cannot hurt, for sure) but the plugs, I'm at the 50,000 km mark now and I think I'm going to change them anyway. Right?
Oh, about that wonderful 'cornering' debate....hell, if the F didn't have that type of behavior I would not have bought it, it's wonderful, provided you don't do it a 60mph. Rome wet cobblestones are a lot of fun!

Sergio,

I'm in the same situation.
46,000 km, oil & filter change every 10,000 km (DIY job).
I'm also wondering about changing the spark plugs before the 100,000 km mark.

oil change: every 5,000km
spark Plug: every 20,000km

I think spark plug are made in a special material which makes that they don't need to be changed so often.

Oil + filter - once a year
Plugs - once a year using the standard double copper ones rather than the long life ones.

Oil & Filter every 5000KM.
Spark Plugs...never bought a used car..it now has 41000 km and i´m thinking in change the spark plugs. I´ve posted a thread about performance spark plugs... but nobody awsered yet! I think it´s better to change the oil & filter every 5000 Km cause some extra pound in oil change is better then engine reparation in car´s late life. I once had a VW Polo G40 with 65mm Pulley in the G ladder = 145 hp..and in Polo´s homepage everybody aggeed to change every 5000Km...i´m doing that in my " f " too. I only use mobil 1 5w50, but i´m going to change to Mobil 1 0w40 Trisynthetic because somebody in the bulletin board said that the viscosity of the oil innfluence the VVC. Rover says 10w40 so i will use 0w40 from Mobil. I use Mobil 1 because there are only two good brand on the market ... MOBIL ONE and the others...! :)

I do an intermediate oil change between the 12k services - ie 6k miles. I use a semi-synthetic oil - Unipart or Castrol whichever is cheapest.

I change the plugs every 12k. I use NGK BKR 6EK's from memory.

I have listed some thoughts on the 'Performance Spark Plugs for the VVC' thread.

Hi,
carefully question ...
How do I get the connectors of the spark plug off ?
I tried it only once when I removed the small black cover plate at my mpi K-Engine. .. pulled and turned a little at the spark plugs connector .. but I did not want to break anything...

Is only a strong pull needed ?

Dieter,

You have found a little problem that has affected all 16valve K engines since 1990.

The grip that can be exerted by the plug sockets on the plugs is amazing. I often find on the 'older' K engined cars that I have to gently grip the ends with pliers and ease them off. What you have to be careful of is not to break the plastic ends which if you simply grab with pliers will happen. I find that long nosed pliers used to grip the two grooves either side of the top is a good way to introduce enough gentle leverage to pop them off.

>not to break the plastic ends
Rog,
thanks for your instruction . So I'm OK. :)
I did not ask that time, because that questions sounded to stupid. :)

:o)

PS Rogs answer is IMO a must for Gregs FAQ.
