MG MGF Technical - How powerfull is a VVC
As title really a 1.8 VVC with pipercross air filters and stock exaust. In BHp to wheels ideally. Also what sort of increase would I get with a new exaust and de cating tube? I will be getting mine put on a rolling road at some point but I am interested to try and calculate the power to weight ratio of the F. Thanks in advance Paul |

The results frm a cat bypass are neglagable, perhaps even counterproductive +/- 1BHP tops, performance exhast will add aprox 5BHP - see thread in MGF general |

Pipercross cone filters - of the type that bolt straight onto the throttle body - aren't the best type of filter for the MGF. The location of the filter looses over 5 bhp to the K&N system whereby the filter is mounted some 6" away from the throttle. Then there is the question of hot air being taken up by the air filter - the Pipercross comes with no cold air intake system - so you loose at least a further 5 bhp. So at the end of the day, Pipercross filters give probably no advantage over the standard paper element! Give the filter some cold air to breath, and you see the following power curves: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/vvc_cf_px_v___std.jpg K&N and Ramair do better: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/vvccone.htm So you are probably looking at 145 bhp (@ flywheel) ± 10%. See the technical menu of http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com for more info on filters, exhausts and cat replacement options. Best combination of exhaust and filter would be the ITG Maxogen air induction kit plus the Mike Satur Daytona exhaust = +20bhp (ish) |

I know that the pipercross aren't the best, my garage fitted it as they didn't have any standard ones in stock. I am considering my next upgrade. It will probably be lowering bits on the suspension or bigger wheels and a sports exaust, I was just trying to figure out if it was worth de catting it. PT |

>>I was just trying to figure out if it was worth de catting it.<< Not really - not unless you've got a better flowing exhaust manifold and exhaust and have an engine pushing 180 bhp at high rpm. With the pretty much standard engines we looked at, we were lucky to see any improvement with either engine (1.8i or VVC). Therefore, from the performance point of view, removal of the cat simply isn't worth the hastle. |

How about one of those PTP 'sports' cats ?? |

Modest advantage over OE at the kind of outputs our engines make as standard, Gaz. |

Depends which PiperX. Mike's "Viper" kit is fully enclosed and also has a cold-air induction system. Cat isn't worth messing with IMO. The biggest limiting factor is the exhaust manifold. Get that sorted first. - Andy S6 AJG |

Not an MG, but the VVC engine in a Lotus: http://www.mgdot.freeservers.com/rr/emerald.htm |

I have found that the benifits to engine responsiveness using a Cat bypass and good exhaust are well worth the mucking around. I don't particularly care about max power figures when the car is much nicer and "sharper" to drive with these changes and a cold air intake system. Try it, you will like it. |
