MG MGF Technical - HT LEADS

To cut a long story short....

I ordered up a set of 8mm magnecor HT leads and asked my local ex-MGR dealer to fit them when my MY2002 MGF 1.8i was in for its MOT and service today.

When I picked her up, they said that the leads were not compatible with the K series engine.

The leads are part number 40175 and marked for Rover 200/400 1.8i 16v DOHC (K series).

Assuming I can sort this out, is it possible to fit them without taking the engine cover off?

Unfortunately it looks like you have ordered the wrong lead set. The Rover 200/400 set will have 5 leads as they have a distributor and is only suitable for MPi F's upto MY2000.

An 2002 MGF will have wasted spark ignition (no dizzy) and top mounted coils, so you need the latter (2001 onwards) set which just has 2 short leads. Part number 40393 in the Magnecor catalog.

The good news is that the 2 lead set is easier to fit as the leads are directly on top of the engine, but the inspection cover will need to come off to fit.

All sorted.

Correct lead set on its way to me, with a small refund of cost difference.

Very impressed by service from sparkplugs.co.uk. - Highly recommended!

Fitting the king lead on the earlier car is a swine of a job. I had to unbolt the coil pack to enable me to unplug the HT lead. Working on the F is like decorating your hallway through the letter box.
