MG MGF Technical - hydraulic tappets

Can you tell me why the hydraulic tappets should be very noisy after a cylinder head gasket replacement engine repair? Why should a cylinder head gasket blow on a fully serviced (MG dealer) 30k engine in the firts place?

If they are consistently noisy then there is something wrong and I would return the car for investigation as they may have 'blocked' an oil way.

If they are noisy just on start up then I would not worry as this is fairly normal - specially after an oil change and clean up.

Why the headgasket should go? Have a look in the archives there is probably more written on this subject than any other.

Hi Robert,

in an ideal world the tappets should be keept numbered and fully covered in oil in a special small container during the work with the head gasket. If not there is a chance that air gets into the system and gives noisy tappets. After some driving with a engine at full temp on both water and oil this air should evacuate and things should be back to normal. If after prolonged driving the noise persists do contact the dealer. As the coolant system is refilled again - keep a freqvent look at the coolant level and maybee also a DIY bleeding to assure all is OK .

Best of luck , Carl.
