MG MGF Technical - I wish I had MGF problems.....but need an MGF first.....

Lemme get this straight. New zealand has the MGF.
Japan has the MGF. Damn it! Someone ship em here so the people here can use this section!
Ned J.

Ned,

Add Australia, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, continental Europe, Turkey, and I think someone mention spotting a MGF in the Canary Islands and Caribbean... But not in the good ol' US of A...

I can sympathize. Once I get transfered back home, most likely I will have to give up my MGF <gulp, whiping a tear out of my eye...>. Ah hell, I'll just have to treat myself to something more reliable like a Boxster S...

Keep waiting and maybe who knows you might find that the MG marquee eventually returns to the US shores with a successor to the F (sans all the quality headaches).

cheers,

Just to rub salt in the wounds even South Africa has the MGF and I understand they have been seen in Mexico!

You should try to persuade the people in power to waive the restrictions on bumper and light heights and then you may find some MGFs in the USA.

As I understand it most of these regulation were introduced in the 70's to reduce the imports of British sports cars and therefore allow the inferior home grown products a chance of sales.

It was in order to meet these new regulations that the body of the MGB was raised one and half inches and the rubber bumpers were introduced. The handling of the car suffered due to these changes and sales dropped - which is what the regulation sought to achieve. Unfortunately the cars were sold in the UK with the same modifications.

Lotus got round the height restriction by reversing the wishbones on the suspension and then telling the US buyers how to put them back the right way, thereby lowering the car back to UK spec. When the US authorities caught onto this Lotus put longer springs on the cars and then told US buyers to cut one and half turns off the springs.

With the huge Ford Expedition SUVs and the like on the roads now a days, most car bumbers easily side under the bumpers of trucks, not to mention the difference between my 73 GT and most SUVs.
Mark Jones

Ralph,

If was only an issue of bumper/headlight height, you would have figured Rover had that solved with the MGF's - the way they pump up the suspension via hydrogas on delivery and afterservice....!!! At one point, I think my F was sitting higher than some of the baby SUV's out here...

Its a bit like the catalytic converters
get throught the rediculous and pathetic red tape then adjust later to taste.

We really should get F's into USA

Is the light/bumper height the only reason why they are not sold there or has it something to do with emissions/ crash worthyness?

Cant anybody enlighten us?

Neil

There was quite a discussion on this subject back in 1996 and general concensus seemed to be that the MGF WOULD pass the US importation criteria but Rover/MG had not submitted the car for this test as they felt that they did not have the dealer setup in the US to support the MGF and as they were/are running at full output without the US market it would not be viable.

By this time one must remember that BMW had become the owners of Rover/MG and many of us felt that they did not want competition for the Z3 in the US.

Combine the two and you can see that the MGF in the US was not going to happen.

Time to start selling them in USA then from specialist outlets

Why is Rover so damned uncreative about selling it's products?
Neil

If Rover don't make much of a profit on a per car basis
imagine how much extra it would cost for shipping to US, paying someone to sell it, warrenty issues, parts

all extra $$$

Perhaps the land of litigation isn't worth getting involved in for reasons often discussed here!!

Maybe if MG temporarily links up with diamler-chrysler, do you suppose something could happen for the car company to get the cars here?
L. Kelly

Ned J., L.Kelly

If they have MGF's in Canada (do they, Mark Jones?) then I guess you could take a one-way flight there and run the car in on the drive back. Of course you then have the problem of servicing, and those warranty repairs;-).

Haven't the product liability laws recently been amended?
