MG MGF Technical - imfo on safty devices rollover hoops req
Can anyone tell me how much fitting is required for the SAFTEY DEVICES roll over hoops ? especially around the T bar if any ? many thanks |
Jonathan Lee |
Hi Jonathan, The Safety Device roll bar is a real pain to fit. Iīve only seen one fited and it involved drastic cutting in the T-bar. Your Roll hood cover wonīt fit any more. Having installed another type of roll hoops myself, I judged the installation of the safety device one very tricky. Also, you need to remove it completely in order to access the engine cover from the parcel shelf. Moreover I donīt think it is allowed to be used in the MGF cup races, only roll cages are. PLease someone correct me if I am wrong. However there are other options for roll hoops; check out the link list on following web sites: http://www.mgtf.be/ http://www.roadstervision.de/ And the Boxter hoops from MS www.mikesatur.co.uk cheers, David. |

I concur with you David - fitting the Safety devices roll hoops does require fairly drastic modification of the T-bar - but that needn't necessarily put you off Jonathan. I don't believe that the SD hoops need to be removed to gain access to the engine inspection panel - the rearward triangulation braces can be removed for this purpose, so should not pose a problem. The SD hoops are not FIA approved, and therefore cannot be used in any form of motorsport as safety protection :o( The SD hoops are not compatible with a windstop (at least, not ones that are currently commercially available). The relative merits of the SD hoops over other designs of hoops are impossible to quantify. However the company's reputation in the field of safety cages is second to none, so when weighing up the options, this could be an important factor. Interestingly, when the prototype TFs were caught testing in Spain last year, they were fitted with the SD hoops (albeit without the triangulation braces - see highlighted area 'B' in this image: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/mgf_spy_pix/spy_images/mgfspy2_small.JPG ) |

Rob, I thought the SD bar had a steel tube running horizontally following the edges of the engine cover, to cross it lateral (lef to right hand o/.t car of course) in the middle where the triangular bars meet up to support. I think you can even drive without the triangels in place (cfr spy piccies) Donīt know for sure though, Cheers, David. |

1. they are a real pig to fit 2. you have a lot of cutting into the t bar which can weaken it,in fact my bar broke up . 3. time to fit including myself, 1 mech + 1 helper aprox 4 /5 hours ( we had to use a ramp to bend the rear brace into shape) 4. to get into the engine panel you have to take off the rear section add 40mins x 2 to remove and refit the cover 5. they are the dogs *********** gerry |

That doesnīt realy sound as your very enthousiastic about them Gerry. question is though, do they look good. īcause, to be beutifull you gotta suffer!! all the best ;-o David. |

IMHO, the Mike Satur roll hoop is a zillion times better! |

david ....they are good, no they are very good both in design and construction in fact i think they are as i said the dogs boo******, but they are in my opion not an extra that you would buy unless you are prepaired to put up with them and their problems. as far as safety i am content that if i should roll they will assist in my protection......i am a happy bunny......gerry |
