MG MGF Technical - Is it worth it

Is it really worth buying an MGF? I have put a deposit down on one to pick up tomorrow, but after hearing of all these HGFs etc i must admit to having second thoughts.I have owned five MGBs in the past and thought that i would like to try an MGF!

Dave if you know how to look after a *B* then you will be OK with an *F* and the *F* is great fun - I (along with many others) have owned my *F* for more than ten years and it has been a lot less trouble than any of the *B*s that I have had.

Go for it but just be aware of the coolant issues - people with a lot more knowledge than me will happily advised you.

Dave, we run a midget as well as the F. The only downside to the F is it is more high tech (less you can do) and parts tend to cost more.
e.g. Midget soft-top £80, F soft top £400+

Having owned my 98 VVC for the past four years and 65,000km it has been a cheap and reliable car to run. My only expenses have been due to changes to improve handling perfomance and looks. Has it been worth it 100% yes, during the first 3 years of my ownership the MG worked as a reps car every day plus weekend competition work. I have just eased her workload by using a car with a better airconditiong system for the hot summer months something that is not a problem in the UK for more than a couple of days a year.

Dave,

I migrated from an MGB GT to an F just over 5 years ago. It had an HGF at 3000 miles, due to a cracked heater pipe decanting coolant. Warranty covered repair.

If yours doesn't come with a warranty, then check our Warranty Direct.

Have never regretted buying the F. It always puts a smile on my face :-)

I bought y 99 F VVC nearly 3 years ago and I have certainly spent less time fixing cars in the rain and the dark than I did with the 2 Rover minis that preceded it. Buy a Coolant sensor kit (~£100), that'll prevent secondary HGF.

There are still plenty of little fixing jobs to do do on an F, but most can be left for a week or two if the weather's rubbish. Apart from the VVC engine and electric windows, they are pretty basic cars, esp Mk1s.

Never regretted buying the car, though I kinda wish I'd bought it after the MGR collapse - they are absolute bargains now!

Unbelieveable good old Ted never fails to amaze me - I have only clicked on 2 threads to read and in both Ted is telling us his F is 10+ old - wonder if there is anyone in the UK that doesnt know about this life changing , news breaking phenomonem ! Im shaking thinking about clicking another thread as odds on Ted will be telling us his F's age.
