MG MGF Technical - Joy was of short duration
Believe it or not, after 4,5 months I got my F back after the neverending EPAS blues finally fixed with help of Jason Harris. But damn, they grin factor was quickly over. Why? 1. now the front wheels are really toe out in a way you just see the wheels toe'ing out when standing in front of car, like 500 kilos has been added in front boot. Tyres will be gone in no time again. This despite dealer trying to get this back ok, dealer has to pump it to 4x4 to get the tyres back toe-in. Never had this before, something special must have happened during the 4,5 months! 2. car is wet snow (you know, wet grey flubber) max speed is 40kph (otherwise it understeers or starts to judder (?right word?) quickly from left to right, making it basically impossible to drive. In rain 80kph (again heavy understeer, even on a straight the front just goes anywhere it likes!) and even in dry the rear breaks out in no time in any corner while you hear the tyres screech everytime you brake, even at very low speeds. Have no clue what it is this time, but I feel really not at easy with this! 3. EPAS itself now works upto 30mph, then it rather cuts off drastically, and kicks in same whay if you go under 30-35mph again. It's no longer gradual. Bof... 4. my Sony safety commander socket seems to be damaged (it can't be fitted fixed anymore), will fry the ass of the dealer this afternoon for that... >:( 5. last but not least, yesterday evening there was a huge traffic jam on the highway and I nearly crashed into a truck. Thanks to my decent upgraded brakes it didn't happen. My fault you would say? NO WAY! The bl**dy f**kin' cr*p accelerator got stuck again, causing this short moment of total anguish! They replaced the throttle cable, the throttle body, rearranged mats and checked pedals, problem was really gone... and now it starts AGAIN. If I crash into a truck because the F decided to accelerate while I wanted it to brake, who will believe me? (if I can still tell it to anyone) Actually I don't dare telling this to my dealer, he'll drop dead if I tell him this "MGF kamikaze feature" has returned. Has anyone an idea what else might cause this accelerator pedal not to come back up after you pushed it? It only happens occasionally (about once every 15 minutes or so), just enough to raise your bloodpressure & adrenaline to rather unhealthy levels in case you approach a standstill car or wall. |

>Has anyone an idea what else might cause this accelerator pedal not to come back up after you pushed it? < Have you tried lifting your foot off the pedal? Seriously though - is it the pedal sticking? Or is it the throttle sticking? The sticking throttle (throttle body by manifold) is the most common fault especially where the filter has been changed for a K&N (or such) or a 'clever' mechanic has simply changed the official Rover induction tube clip for a worm drive (Jubilee) clip and it has been overtightened which distorts the throttle body so preventing the smooth operation of the butterfly. There are other reason I know such as twisted or damaged cable or faulty ECU and even just gunge in the throttle body. Ted |

A large number of problems were reported by Elise owners with throttle sticking- seems that the problem was with the plastic throttle body, and many of them that gone and changed them to alloy items (available from Rover- but Stu recently had a cheap supply of these). Other causes of the sticking throttle are exactly as Ted describes. What is going on with your dealer???! There is no need to pump up the suspension to correct abnormal toe-angles. That is crazy. The problems with the steering and the vibration clearly indicate that the tracking is WAY out. I suggest that you have a chat to the dealer about this. Can't believe that the car has been returned with so many faults unresolved. >:o( Rob |

Rob, I will be looking at a metal throttle body this year some time, B&G have one but it looks a bit pricy, what is the Rover part number and price. Are these the same units? |

I don't have the Rover part number on me, but I could find out for you. I'd be pretty sure that the B&G item is the same item as the Rover throttle body. Rob |

Sorry to hear about all troubles still going on, there is nothing as important as good dealer service but ooh so hard to find !! Regarding the throttle -body , isnīt that one supposed to be an old 2-Litre engine Vauxhall / Opel item ?? Did read somewhere about that, not a so easy swap thou...Some rework on body and potentiometer needed. Anyone out there with more info ? Regards , Carl. |

to be clear,it is the PEDAL sticking, you need to tap quickly with your feet onto it, or sometimes have to put your feet under it to get it up again. And you can imagine the noise coming from behind you since the revs are hitting 7250 non-stop. very healthy, afterwards when it blows up they can again say it was a 'PILOT ERROR'... In that case I'll be Mike Tyson for a minute ;) And damn, bad news, there was a guy at dealership who was interested in buying my F, but this weekend he had a severe car crash (he 'somewhat' survived it)... Question to God "Wasn't he supposed to crash with my F instead of with his Rover 620 Turbo?" |

Dirk A sticky throttle body or sticking cable would have exactly the same effect and the only way to test it is to disconnect the cable from the throttle body and from the pedal and try each one for free movement. But any good mechanic can do that for you if you don't want to do it youself. Ted |

>And you can imagine the noise coming from behind you since the revs are hitting 7250 non-stop. When the accelerator is stuck, do the engine revs up to the rev-limiter, even when the pedal isn't pushed completely down? Or does it only happen when the pedal is pushed to the metal? Oohhh, and that man at your dealer who wanted to buy your car... he isn't the only one. But I think you won't be happy with the price I am offering. Keep it safe, Erik (when will your beemer be delivered) |

Erik, the accelerator is not stuck to the metal, but you still have to retract it using the tip of your foot to stop it from banging the redline when neutral gear is chosen. So it's somewhere in the middle when it happens. And no, it's not after pushing pedal to the metal, can even happen when parking your car (and who would do PTTM when parking your car?!) Men at dealer offered satisfactory price, but now I might be able to sell it to someone for an even higher price (but still lower than going market price for similar ones)! Keep fingers crossed. (even for buyer ;) Beemer: May/June... now thinking of Nu Shooz 80s hit "I-I-I can't wait" :) |
