MG MGF Technical - Jumping out of gear

I have had my P reg VVC now for one week. There are a couple of things I am curious (!) about.

1) High speed handling (see seperate thread - thanks for responses)

2) Today the car jumped out of fifth gear - did I just not select fifth positively enough or is this an F quirk? Seen comments about new gearboxes?!

3) The engine sounds great on the move but sounds a bit tappety at idle. My old Golf's tappets were noisy and it is a similar but less dramatic sound - is this typical of the F or should I get it checked out? Of course, didn't notice on the test drive and inspection.

Jumping out of gear with this gearbox is usually because the original engagemnet was not full. This may be down to you on that specific shift, or if it occurs more frequently then the likelyhood is that it's not fully engaging because of a need to adjust the cables.

The hydraulic tappets on the K series can 'drain down' during periods when the car is parked up. Usually when the engine is restarted the oil pressure soon expells any air and quietens thinks down. However this may on occasion take a few miles of running at normal temp.

Regular oil changes are a critical factor with any engine running hydraulic tappets. I personally favour a more frequent oil and filter change than is shown in the service schedule. In cases where the major use of the car is in urban traffic and shorter journeys then I think that earlier oil changes will repay the investment with improved high mileage service.

Thanks Rog, I'll monitor the situation on the gear change. Probably just me getting use to the gearbox. The car is due for a service. Only 3k since last with previous owner, but over 12 months now. better get this done soon. Thanks for the tips.

Hiya,

The "jumping out of 5th gear syndrome" is something I've also experienced on a few occasions since I
purchased my P reg 1.8 'F in June this year.

Although I'd suspected that it was more likely due to "bad" gear changes as they occur so infrequently - seeing this thread may possibly change my opinion.
