MG MGF Technical - K & N 57i - Ye Ha...
Just fitted a 57i to my VVC. Boy, all the comments about grin injection are so right. The car now sounds like a sports car should sound. Now when you press the loud pedal, it really is. However, when cruising along it's just as quiet as it used to be (save a little "air" noise behind the passenger). The throttle response also is now much more crisp, and it just makes you want to use it. Lancaster Insurance didn't want a penny more for the mod either. A vary sensible attitude. If anyone out there hasn't done it yet, I can (along with many before me) throughly recomment it as an "early" modification well worth doing. Paul |

I think it's only fair to say that the PiperX Vector Cone kit is just as good (and recommended above the K&N by Mike Satur and Moto-Build)... I've got one fitted to my F now, and it really does make quite a difference ;) Shash |

Hi Guys, SOrry Shash, I have to agrre with most people that the K&N is the better of the 2 (Piper cross), Mike probably rates them higher than the K&N because he sells Piper cross rather than K&N? Rob did you test the Piper Cross on those filters teste you did? Regards James |

I've been saying that I would buy a K&N for my mpi for a long time but never did it until now. I'm wondering how noisy it is at high speed on the motorway (well, you all know the car is noisy on the motorway, isn't it worse with the K&N) Moreover my courage fails me when it comes to install it .... Jerome, It makes such little difference when at a steady speed on the motorway that you'll hardly notice any change. However, when you put your foot down, it says "hello, you've got a K&N fitted" and that smile appears. Fitting is really easy. You remove more than you fit! (induction hose, resonance box, air filter). Paul |

Paul is right Jerome, its easy to fit, i did mine just before christmas, and its well worth it. I think the instructions i followed are from Rob Bell's site. well worth printing out, i think they are copied on the FAQ aswell - linked at the top of the page. Paul - have you found any tunnels yet. well if you do make sure you go into it as slow as possible and with plenty of clear road ahead of you, because you won't want to let off the gas to you get out the other end. Jerome - as for cruising, it makes next to no difference, it only makes the noise when you want it to. and you will want it to. apparently it could help fuel consumption aswell, but unfortunatly i haven't managed to find out because i'm alays slowing down and accelerating and then slowing down again and accelerating again, just to hear it. my fuel bill is huge at the mo. |

They didn't release as much power as the K&N 57i or the Ram air induction kit. However, the filters we tested were supplied direct from Pipercross. At that time no induction kit was supplied with the kits, but ofcourse, since then, everyone has learned from the K&N model. Mike Satur's kit is not just the filter (which is very cheap at under 30 quid)- but a developed induction kit. Whilst I haven't yet seen the installation (any chance of a picture Shashi?) I would guess that the principles would be identical to the K&N 57i. Therefore the kit would consist of a filter, a 6" long spacer tube to attach the filter a small distance away from the throttle body, and a cool air feed to the filter. Which would be best? I would suggest that its performance would be pretty much identical to the Ram air filter (similar foam filter construction), which is almost exactly the same as the K&N 57i!!! Next argument to consider when determining which filter 'is best' is particulate filtering efficiency. All filter companies, as far as I can tell, claim that their's is the most efficient- and say they have MIRA test data to prove it. Whilst I am not going to cast dispersions, how can all the filters claim be the most efficient? Also, without providing the data for independent scrutiny, there is a permanent level of doubt in my mind... For me, I'll keep with the K&N: better the devil I know!!! AS for filters in general, the next generation of kits are here in the shape of the ITG filter box system. This has to be the gold standard filter, and I'd love to be able to test one out! Rob |
