MG MGF Technical - K&N Filter and Trophy
I have ordered the K&N kit for my Trophy 160. I'm a little concerned that this might be a waste of time. Does anyone happen to know if there would be any advantage to fitting the kit to the Trophy? Anyone actually done it and if so was there any benefit besides the better engine sound. Thanks for any help. Steve. |

Steve, We have discussed this before when the Trophy was first introduced, the considered opinion then was that a replacement panel filter would be the best cost option, as the trophy already had most of the other K+N improvements anyway. Check the Archives. Mike, Yellow Trophy, M2 VJN |

I have a K&N induction kit on my Trophy, and love it! I had the kit fitted before I took delivery on the new car in March, so I never drove mine without it. However, I drove a different Trophy, without the kit, and I definitely think it is worth it. The throttle response is better on my car, and there seems to be slightly more power, although not a huge amount. The induction of cold air to the open cone filter is much better on the K&N kit, so this does make sense. In addition to this, it needs little maintenance, and has a lifetime guarantee. Plus, there is that noise! I don't regret it at all, but then I didn't pay for it. It was transferred from my old 1.8mpi to my Trophy free of charge by my dealer when I changed cars. My dealer (Syd Brown & Sons of Longridge) who are excellent, also said that they fitted a K&N to a Trophy, and were impressed with the gains. They must have thought it makes a difference. as the trophy already had most of the other K+N improvements. Could you explain this statement please, I suspect you actually meant something else. Do you mean A. The Trophy air filter system is almost as good as the K&N system anyway or B. The Trophy system makes less noise than the K&N. :-) If you clean a K&N properly and re-oil it every now and then, it should last longer than the car, it comes with a Million Mile Guarentee. The Trophy filter will need replacing more regularly. I would say that more recently some very good panel filter systems have been produced which compare very well with the K&N cone. But for the price I think the K&N is a really good replacement filter system. For a trophy I think maybe you would not notice too much difference, only the grin factor. |
