MG MGF Technical - K&N filter revisit
hi.... just about to purchase K&N 57I kit, but heard from a friend who goes against it. he said, it will not fit with the BKK, Thailand condition - poluted, wet, and during raining season - flood is very common. any thought on this anyone. thanks hank |

Cant imagine it being a problem. better still enclose it and duct it to the side intake to get a little more bhp, if your going through puddles deeper than your side intake you've got the wrong type of rover! its a land rover your looking for!! Stu Wokingham |

I know what the roads are like in the monsoons and you do NOT want an enlosed system with air feeds under the car. Quickest way to get water into the engine and the need for a new engine! Also airflow from the side intakes is almost none existent. They are decoration to show off the rear engine! Cheers Patrick |

Hank SC and Patrick are talking sense. If you use the recommended K&N arrangement of pipes, you will only get a good supply of cool air when the car is moving quite fast. A rough calculation suggests the air speed through the pipes has to be a minimum of 40kph in order to satisfy the engine at maximum revs, which means the car has to travel even faster. K&N intend the pipes to force-feed air, which means that if you go through any deep puddles, you do run the risk of forcing water into the engine as well. The alternative, as you know, is to run the filter inlet to the left-hand side vent, where air-flow is only dependent on the engine sucking in air, so less likely to catch water, at least in the UK. Thie side inlet is about the same height as the original MG inlet over the rear subframe so should be reasonably safe. For around 18 months I used a flower-pot enclosure for my K&N, taking air from the left-hand wheel arch and found even this crude arrangement gave better low speed pick-up than I experienced with the standard K&N arrangement. Remember that K&N filters are fitted to waterscooters, so must be pretty good at repelling water, and note that we in the UK , too, get a fair bit of rain! No one I have heard of have suffered from a K&N filter related problem. |

Hank, the K&N literature ppraises the water-repellancy. As Rob says, fitted to water scooters and also motorbikes where they are exposed to the elements. |
