MG MGF Technical - K&N induction queory
Just fitted a K&N induction kit to my 1997 1.8i mgf ( sounds the dogs ) But now the car is idling at around 1500 rpm. Never had this problem with other cars i have modded before. So is there anything i need to adjust on the mgf to get it idling at correct rpm? Thanks in advance for replies |

Managed get the car idling at 1000 rpm by adjusting the throttle sensor. |

Would have been easier if you'd just reset the ECU sensor input circuit: - ignition on - key accelerator five times within 10 seconds - ignition out Start engine. |

Dieter Sorry, what do you mean by key accelerator. Do you mean rev the engine or just blip the accelerator with the ignition on but engine off. Thanks. |
Len |
Len Ignition on but engine not running then as Dieter says Ted |

and he means 'press' by 'key' Ignition on, but engine not running Press Accelerator to the floor 5 times Ignition off Now restart engine to see effect! |

Ted and Dave, Thanks for that. |

I fitted a K&N filter to my 98 MGF sometime ago, but had no difference in idle speed. I did however have a difference in the amount of fuel I was using!!!! It was because I would floor it at any opportunity that would make that wonderful noise. LOL. Actually I just went out to my car (yes it's 1.00am here) and did the reset function. I will see if it makes any difference in the morning when I start the car. (The neighbours would not appreciate my enthusiasm by starting the car now.) Cheers, Branko. |

I did the reset function, and to honest i cannot tell any differance at all. |

>>I did the reset function, and to honest i cannot tell any differance at all. Often the case. But, if the calibration in the ECU is way out, it can help. |

The other problem - that's not been mentioned yet - is when tightening a worm-drive jubilee clip to a plastic throttle body. What often happens is the throttle body will distort under the unequal clamping load, causing the throttle to stick and thus run a high idle. Sometimes you can get away with this by simply undoing the clamp a little. Sometimes you don't - and replacement (52mm alloy throttle body beckons) becomes necessary. The K&N instructions should come with a relevant warning. Tight enough is usually just sufficient to stop the spacer tube from being wriggled off... http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/air_filters/f_fitting.htm |
