MG MGF Technical - K&N out - PIPERCROSS VIPER IN

Hi all

Back to the land of the sane !! was in the states last week. not the ideal week to be out there with the 9/11 thing.. they really think they are at war !!

Anyway finally got time to remove my K&N and replace it with my recently purchased Pipercross Viper filter !

What a difference !!! wow !!!

Feels much more torquey on the lower range especially when pulling away and the air sucking through the side intake sounds amazing...

I like it !! I like it alot !!!

Rob, if you wanna get together to compare it with the ITG etc.. I'm up for it..

Cheers all

Good point - how about another article from the MG World contributors. I'm sure quite a few would be more than interested in a comparision of the new enclosed filters, on both older and new cars.
Anything in the pipeline?

Darren.

Stu, I have just fitted (with a little help) the Viper 2 to my VVC, bit of a squeeze,it does fit, even though you think no way when you get this shiny red thing out of the box.
I hope to put the car on a rolling road soon and would like to know the power gains for this compared to the K&N kit that was removed and against standard.
The car certainly seems to breath much easier through the whole rev range.
If anyone would like to buy a second hand K&N 57i (4 months use)Kit for £40 please give me a mail.

Ultimate power is not likley to showmuch difference, however as I have said for years cold air is a real bonus in the production of torque and this is where you should see the major difference.

Torque provides the means for the accelerative punch you use day in and day out. Maximum power is a number useful in discussions over a pint or two!

Stu,

Is your MGF a VVC or Mpi? And, did you get your PiperX Viper thru Mike Satur or somewhere else? If you bought elsewhere, could you let me have the model and part number(s) please? I've had a squiz through my local dealer and they don't have any info on a model to suit my Mpi.

Also, was is difficult to install? Did the kit come with instructions or is just commonsense? Any problems with the installation?

Sorry for the interrogation mate but it's bloody hard to come by on useful advice.

Cheers,
Phil

I'm not sure that advertisers would be entirely happy with a 'scrap head challenge' inspired airbox comparison, but this is ideal enthusiast material - for a club mag perhaps? (Rog?)

Hi Phil

I have a 97 VVC, I bought the Viper from Moto-build in Feltham, UK.. It was pretty easy to install, but you will need to remove the engine cover under the hood.. first time i'd done this and the whole thing too about an hour... It's common sense really.... Incidently lived down your way for a bit (was in Cooma for about two months....)

Cheers

Hello Stu,

I recently fitted the Viper also to my car (bought it at MS). As you say; pretty straightforward to install with the exceptance of the engine cover that has to be removed. I have the airinlet situated at the bottom of the car (attached to the subframe); but have been thinking to move it to the side air intake. Originally I mounted the air inlet quite low; but on a rainy day I attached it a bit higher. Haven't looked at it; but is the side air intake easy to reach ? Have you got any instructions how you attached it ? Most impressed with this filter BTW. It makes the car feel a lot more responsive compared to the standard panel filter...

G'day Stu

We would have been neighbours! I live in Tuggeranong which folks say is almost North Cooma (LOL). What were you doing in Cooma if I'm not being too personal?

Cheers,

Didn't think you could "pull" that much air from the side intake grills, would induction pipes similar to the KN offer more cold air? ie fitted to the floorpan?

It al depends for what reason you've installed the airfilter. I only installed my K&N for the sound, and IMO it sounds better than the Viper for a much lower price. The TTB makes it even a bit louder. If you want improved performance, go for the viper or ITG. I also think you will 'catch' more air from the side intake, compared with the underside of the car. The underside of the car has a much lower pression than the side.

Personally I think +8 BHP on an MPi and +15 BHP on a VVC is pretty damn good for an upgrade that costs less than 100 quid including tax.

I'm not going to bore you (again) by mentioning my flower pot enclosure - well ok if you insist.

All the enclosures clearly are better than an open air filter, purely because they are isolated from the hot air around the engine and they give the engine all the air it can take, but what makes one enclosure better than another?

My money is on the aerodynamics. The MS unit and the 820i both have a cone-shaped inlets and relatively small hoses, my flowerpot uses oversize, (100mm) corrugated hoses and parallel fittings. There is also the question of the clearance between any filter and the enclosure.

Anyone got access to a CFD programme we could use to see whether there is any point in combining the two approaches?

I run a Golf GTi and V8 mgb roadster, both cars have shown a noticeable improvement in both torque and MPG after switching from K&N's to PiperCross filters, tickover speed increased in both cases, it would appear the PiperCross filter flows a lot better than the K&N

That's my point, but how much is down to the filter and how much to the profile of the housing?

>> The MS unit and the 820i both have a cone-shaped inlets <<

Hmmm, TTBOMK only the ITG has the conical intake. The PiperViper, Hurricane and Rover 820i have cylindrical ones.

All do the same job, but in theory at least the conical intake of the ITG Maxogen moves it on a stage further. Hell of a lot of cash for a cone though and you don't even get an ice cream! :-)

Andy, for info the internal design of the Pipercross Viper has a inverted cone shape filter.
