MG MGF Technical - Latest Spec Thermostat

Taken from the Another HGF thread

>>Also, the current Freelanders are being equipped with the latest spec thermostat, designed to reduce the thermal cycling implicit in the cooling system's design. These are now being fitted to mgtfs currently coming off the production line. Or so a little bird tells me. ;o)<<

Rob, don't know if you've been speaking to the same little bird as me, but I'd heard this too. I wonder if it will be possible to retro-fit this latest spec thermostat design to older F's, as the location of the thermostat is a big HGF culprit IMO.

Anyone know any more about this?

Jim, I'd like to find out more information on this too. From what I gather, the new thermostat also requires some new 'plumbing' - so it is a little more 'involved' than a simple swapping of the thermostat.

However, I can't see any reason why this new thermostat cannot be retro-fitted to earlier MGFs and TFs.
Rob Bell

No big HGF colprit IMO. One of course but there are loads of different more important.

>the new thermostat also requires some new 'plumbing'

Easy said ;). I remenber a speach from Carl, saying:
The engine is build around the thermostat .. (or similar)

Just a bit David! ;o)

From what I heard it is a bypass hose in parallel with the heater system. Rather like having a heater circuit continually open but not through the actual core of the heater. So gives continual small supply of hot water to the thermostat which keeps it open slightly even though the water in the rad may be stone cold.

Overheard ...

'Overheard' = don't take this as gospel

Hmm, should be easy to explore if any TF owner will be able *at any time* to remove the triangle cover in front of the heater valve and take a picture ;)
Or do you mean it's a restricted shortcut in the engine bay ?
Anyway, sounds like a kind of copy of the Elise setup. (Heater Matrix always on, heater control done by air flaps)
Dieter K.

Dieter,

No, I think it's the same setup as now but with another restricted shortcut across the heater circuit in the engine bay.

Yeeks, I wonder what they did and whether it could be a misunderstanding together with the TF 160 water-oil cooler setup.

Anyway, I know there may be a failure regarding water flow directions in this pic.

May be we can find out more if any out there can correct this old page (never revised)

This one from the MGF for comparison with MGTF.
I think if there is any new shortcut (whyever) then it might be visible in this direction in the TF engine bay.
Dieter K.

I'll have to ask around, because I have next to no details on this. But for those of us who like a track day or three ;o) and would rather avoid HGFs, then this new TF thermostat and TF160 water/oil heat exchanger would be just the ticket :o)
