MG MGF Technical - mgf 1996 stiff steering

i have a mgf the steering is very stiff, have had new ball joints, new suspension struts, shock absorbers. and front and back brakes, and the tracking done and it is still very heavy, dont know what else to do can anyone help please.

Does it definitely have Electronic Power Assissted Steering(EPAS)?
I have one without EPAS and it is normally quite stiff at low speeds compared to almost all other cars which nowadays have some form of power assistance.

How do i know if it has EPAS sorry if this is a silly question

Hi Donna,
If your car is an "mpi" model and not a "vvc", then EPAS (electric power assisted steering) was an option. To check if you have EPAS do the following. With the key in the ignition and the steering lock disengaged (ignition off), feel the effort to turn the steering wheel. Now start the engine - and turn the steering wheel again. If the resistance felt is the same then you don't have EPAS.

All is not lost because you can retro fit a steering column with EPAS fitted. You can search on Ebay for one and get your local friendly MG guru to fit it.

Donna,

You may have EPAS fitted but maybe it's just not working. If you look under the bonnet, (on the passengers side) if you have power steering you should see a big fuse (70amps I think). If you don't have this then no EPAS I'm afraid. However if you do, take the fuse out and make sure that it's not blown or the connections are not dirty - either of these things can stop the power steering working. The EPAS also relies on getting a signal from the speedo so that it can reduce the "help" that it gives the faster you go until it gives none at all. If you have the fuse and it's OK then it might be a problem with the ECU or speedo sender unit.
