While for your sake I hope you get your price, I read yesterday about someone getting a 99 S reg for £6500. The article added that you should be able to get one for under £9k usually? Sorry |
steve |
Thanks for that, was that the Jap import, with the blown head gasket, leaky boot, and damaged soft top, which was stolen, crashed, recovered and repaired in day-glow orange! If so I think I looked ones like that when I bought my MGF and I think I would rather have a older car which is genuine. Kind regards James |
James |
I read the same story, i think it said the car needed a service and tyres. I do think its an incredible(ly depressing) price, lets hope it was a one off or we may as well pack up now and give the cars away. |
Paul |
I sold my Jap import'97 BRG VVC, new green hood, new SO2 tyres, Remus exhaust, K&I filter, S/S grilles, smoked glass indicators/parking lights, 6000 miles since new...and certainly no HG problems or leaky boot....for approx UKP10K....am still regretting I did it. |

Paul, did you really buy the F for its re-sale value? I don't think the prices are too bad - after all, there's been a large general reduction in forecourt prices here over the past year, the internet has made finding/importing cars so easy, and it is the middle of winter at the mo. Mine's 4 1/2 years old, and is worth around half the cost of a brand new one's list price - about two thirds of the price of a deliery mileage pre-registered. 6500 is very low, even for the oldest N-reg cars. But there's always reasons... |

I THOUGHT I WOULD ADD A COMMENT,3 WEEKS AGO,I PURCHASED, A IMMACULATE, WHITE MGF1.8I. FOR £9600. IT HAD 6560 miles, and plenty of extras. THE winter is best time to buy. AND Worst time to sell,if your looking for top Money. |

James, having had a quick look at www.exchangeandmart.co.uk (results below) you look about 2k+ over the market. It's sad but true. You've got to remember : - used values generally have taken a hammering over the last year to 18 months due to european imports. - selling a convertible when it's p*ssing with rain every day is hard! - rover values generally have gone down the toilet - even more than the market in general. I'm sure the car is great but the market is against you. Mine is a 'P' reg and i'd be interested to get an idea what the market clearing price on her is. good luck! - let us know how you get on. I bought my 1996 (N) BRG VVC in London recently for £9250, with 36,000 miles, 2 years warranty, full leather, spots, CD and good condition (had to replace the front tyres cos of tracking problem), but I thought I had a goodish deal. I was sure I could have bought cheaper out of London, and it may have done less work (i.e. less stop-start driving and more motorway miles), but I think the market is quite depressed at the moment. The guy I bought the car from had paid £4000 more only one year before (from a dealer). I would say that a major concern when buying is the number of owners. Mine had 3 previous, but looking through the history made them all look good. The person I bought from was heavily pregnant, so I couldn't doubt their reasons for selling! There are alot of fishy cars out there though, so I would price your car via the Parkers guide, not the cheapest of the small ads. |

HI,I Purchased a 1998 'R' VVC in blue 3 years waranty 6 months left,no real extras, but in mint condition, new tyres all round 20K on the clock PAYED!!! £10,250 I THINK I GOT A GOOD DEAL CONSIDERING ALL PRICES I HAVE SEEN.Hope it runs trouble free in the summer had slight problem on cold starts but has been fixed, fingers crossed, must now fit K&N plus new plugs ken |
KEN |
Just to give you an idea of prices on the continent. I am soon to be the drooling owner of a Holland-supplied VVC. I did a lot of shopping around and the best I could get was 47444 guiders (excl. vat) which worked out at £15700 (inc. vat) when I bought the currency in September. FYI, the UK list price of the extras is about £1450, I think - full leath, chrome pack+lighter, metallic paint, mudflaps, silver console+vents. Only the one year warranty, though. I suppose this is the sort of deal with which we should be comparing second hand prices. If anyone wants it, I'll give you the details of the dealer. |

Joel and Ken Welcome to the club!!! Joel Where abouts in E Sussex are you?? Stefan |
Stefan Gibney |
I just purchased a brand new MGF 1.8i Plat silver, 15miles on the clock for £14995. I know some may reply and say that you should have bought it s/hand but for me I thought of the following: 1. No previous dodgy owners hammering it. 2. three years worry free warranty. 3. ever keeping it three years, the residuals seem to be around £11k for a three year old, which means a drop of £4k for driving a new card for three years. 4. My mondeo depreciated by £11k in four years. 5. MGF's dont seem that reliable so I guess it will make more than one or two visits to the garage in its three years of warranty. 6. low interest rates on new cars. |

Tried to sell mine in November (98R 19k miles) & couldn't even get the GFV value of £10400. Was getting prices of 9.5k-ish, so it went back to Rover. Sad really. :o( Dave http://www.mgfvvc.freeserve.co.uk |

Joel >> ever get down this neck of the woods ? << Every now and again. It wasn't you that had an argument with a bouncer in Eastbourne a few weeks ago was it (did you see the thread from Matt)?? Stefan |
Stefan Gibney |
Stefan, "It wasn't you that had an argument with a bouncer in Eastbourne a few weeks ago was it?" Me? , engaged in scuffles with gentleman of the door? - with my reputation ? not likly your honour... have to confess I don't over to Eastbourne that often. Althought I did have enormous grin on this evening when I got home, BMW copaq's, when will they learn? |
Joel |
Hi Joel, Welcome to the boards! >>>well me and my new baby (BRG - P241 SWU) live in sunny Seaford by the sea, (it's like Eastbourne, but with more pensioners and less shops!)<<< I have a mate that lives in Seaford ... Intresting, I know! :) >>>It wasn't you that had an argument with a bouncer in Eastbourne a few weeks ago was it (did you see the thread from Matt)??<<< LOL Stefan! ... I guess we'll have to keep asking, and asking and asking untill we find him! heh heh! :0 The three of us should go on a cruise sometime, and i don't mean to the Carrabien either! ;) -Matt |
Matt |
Matt ; Stefan, Sounds good lads, we should get together for a bit to eat and take the cars out for a spin. Matt, where do you get your F serviced? - Heard a lot of horror stories in these hallowed pages, would be useful to know of somewhere decent, if such a place exists... Stefan, you up for some of this action? |
Joel |
>>>Matt, where do you get your F serviced? - Heard a lot of horror stories in these hallowed pages, would be useful to know of somewhere decent, if such a place exists<<< I take it back to where i bought it from, Harwoods in West Sussex. It's about a 45 minute drive (any excuse to drive the F!) :o) >>>we should get together for a bit to eat and take the cars out for a spin.<<< Yay! Wait untill early March if you can though! I'm waiting for my second F at the moment. If not then you guys should have fun! :) -Matt |
Matt |
Guys >> ... Wait untill early March ... << I'll have my F back out in Switzerland at the end of April, but I'm not sure that I'll be home in March at all. I might have to wait till the Treffen to meet you ... you are going to the Treffen, aren't you?? >> Harwoods in West Sussex << How have you found them?? Took my F there for a service and an MOT, and it came back with the brake lights jammed on. Not good really! Stefan |

I have a Feb 2000 platinum 1.8i with chrome grills and silver dash/vents. I bought new for £17k and with 22k miles amn being offered £10,500 for trade in. Is this a good offer or should I consider private sale? |
alan |
Just wondered what your views were on sensible asking price for my 97P VVC in amaranth (seemed like a good idea at the time), 6CD, colour coded-hard top and plated J7 MGF. Walnut dash also. 31,400 miles owned from new. I'm told that 11K is about the best I can hope for. Any pearls of wisdom greatly appreciated. Andrew |
