MG MGF Technical - MGF; I WANT MORE !!

I have a late '97 VVC and added last year a K&N which undoubtedly gave more noise. What else is out there to get more kick ??!!??

How much more do you want to spend Danny?

The filter was certainly a good place to start, and as a bolt on goody, it represents good value for money for relatively little pain.

But for real go, this approach is not going to yield you very much more in outright 'go'.

For this, you are going to need to look at some serious engine mods.

The VVC is an excellent engine, but insofar as tuning goes, your options are more limited than those open to an owner of a 1.8i (cams, gas flowed big valve heads etc).

Look arround, and take note of those companies specialising in Lotus Elise performance goodies that may provide you with more options.

As a VVC owner however, how does a Supercharger grab you? There is a kit developed for the MGF by Turbotechnics, and now retailed by Brown and Gammons. About 4 grand will give your car a power boost to 210 bhp... Drop either Brown and Gammons or Turbotechnics a line for more information...

K&N = +8 BHP on 1.8i / +15 BHP on VVC according to tests
Sports Exhaust = +2 to +4 BHP (VVC and MPi) according to tests
Cat Bypass = +2 BHP

The performance exhaust can reduce low end Torque so maybe a Power boost valve should be added to give you that extra pickup when accelerating.

Using an alternate ECU can give more power but must be mapped correctly and a higher octain fuel used or you could run the risk of damaging your engine. This will only advance the timing.

After this you are really looking at getting the head ported and generally cleaned up, not sure about this with a VVC. With the 1.8i you can also go for bigger valves, new camshafts etc. One other improvement could be getting a better (metal) induction manifold.

If you have even more money you can go for a Supercharger or Turbo upgrade, maybe separate throttle bodies, a fully programmable ECU. The only thing with this is that by the time you have spent all this money you may as well have got a TVR in the first place. Some of the other engine mods may be required to take the extra power. Also the Supercharger won't fit if you have airco.

One point that must also be added, if you really start to improve the performance you should also look at getting Powerflex bushes fitted to the suspension, having Bigger brake disks and better pads, changing the tracking settings etc. Once you start the bills just keep on coming, I would also only attempt this if your F has ABS as you may be able to get into situations you can't get out of safely otherwise.
