MG MGF Technical - MGF power expectations
Just wondering what sort of power increases to expect once I've got the dyno-run done... "97 MGF VVC ditched for Piper 185 cams 68mm throttle body (ex ford falcon) Camaro exhaust system (saves weight) K&N cone filter in ducted 5 litre cold air box Gas flowed head Emerald ECU (needs tuning on dyno in near future) Seems to go well at moment, with only base map loaded up at present. Any other suggestions for more "ooompff" please feel free to comment. Thanks. |

A PRT won't give more oomph, but it might help reliability. Chris |

clean the inside flashing from the inlet manifold and smooth out the welding where the exhaust header pipes meet the plate - this is internal but take care that you don't overdo it, IIRC the exhaust is already a bit bigger than the ports, and too much grinding will cause a big step that provokes turbulance |

Hi Good to hear of another modified K series car in NZ (even if mine's not in an F ;)). Just out of interest, who ported the head for you? Do you have it flowed on a bench at all? Cheers Andy |

I was lucky and all the wrok was done before I bought it. Unfortunately the previous owner has been unable to find the flow graphs. Digging through receipts at the moment as it may be hiding in there somewhere. Also has uprated fuel pump from Mike Satur, exhaust header and downpipe also Mike Satur stainless free flow 4-2-1 system (wrapped) Hopefully be on the dyno in the near future and see what all the wok has done. Filters, oil and plugs before then though. |

Sounds like a very tasty specification engine you have there. I would guess that you're looking at somewhere in the region of 190-210 bhp - depending on rpm limit and the quality of the head porting. I'd definitely get that manifold on the car (if it isn't already) before getting the Emerald mapped... PS as you probably know, there ought to be some very good 'base maps' available for your specification of engine for the guys doing the mapping to work with - if you haven't tried Emerald directly already, you can also try the Lotus section of this forum, or indeed the SELOC forum. Let us know how you get on! :o) |

Thanks for all the comments and suggestions so far. I'm just in the process of tracking down a reputable dyno tuner at the moment, so hopefully will have some results on paper before too long, depending on the waiting list for the shop. |

Where abouts are you in NZ? We use Torque Performance in Rosebank Rd if you're in Auckland, they've now got a little experience with the K series having done both my midget and the Elise we supplied a few bits for, although they're both VVC cars.... |

I'm in Auckland also, The guys at Turbo Vehicles in Penrose have tuned the Emerald ECUs before; apparently they are very good at what they do, but like everything, do pay for that service. Whats the service, end result like from Torque Performance, and cost? Do you also have an Emerald ECU that they tuned? My engine started life as a VVC... Thanks for your input. |

Torque Performance are pretty good, have had good experiences with them. But like you say, you pay for what you get. Yep both cars are running Emerald's (Dad is the NZ agent), and both are running modified exhaust cams, throttle bodies, modified big valve heads, with slightly different exhuast systems. Only other difference is mine is slightly higher compression and 1.9l... |

Thanks for the info Just sent the list off to Robin now to see what sort of time/price I'd be looking at through them. Probably will go there rather than Turbo Vehicles as obviously T.Perf has relatively recent experience with the engine/ECU combination. ooops Cams are 285's, not 185 :) |
