MG MGF Technical - MGF Tyres
Hi Urgent help needed please as I am confused. I need 4 tyres. Went to Kwik fit and they were about to put 4 continentals on but did not have them all so I have to go back tomorrow. I paid a deposit etc, but it seems like they can only get 2 so I have a chance to change. I have seen messages that say these are rubbish tyres - why? The only other option that I see thay have is pirelli - they have p7000 for the back and p6000 or p7 for the front. What is the right pairing and is this a good choice - P7000 got a good review somewhere else. Most of my driving is motorway so need something suitable and that does not scare the crap out of me when its wet like the NCT3's I have at the moment do. Help - what do I do, so many conflicting opinions! |

Tyre choices are summarised here - http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/tyres/index.htm On an MGF, always have the same tyres on the front AND rear of the car - there have been far too many stories of poor handling where people have mixed tyres. Pirelli are good - and the P7000 came out well in the BBS tyre survey. Continentals haven't really had much of a look in - although they are fitted as standard fit on TFs with 15" wheels. Two things: 1. the best tyre with the best value for money at the moment is arguably the Toyo T-1 Proxes - and close behind that, the Bridgestone RE720. I really would recommend you seek these out. 2. Kwick Fit are very very expensive for tyres. There are plenty of on-line vendors who will under cut their prices by a substantial margin - or if you are close to Andover, then use Micheldever tyres (I do) who are also extremely competitive... |

Kev. Would agree with Rob, just changed from Continentals to toyo-Proxes, great tyres, at a great Price!. Even the tread pattern looks Sexy :o) |

Don't know your whereabouts in Hampshire, but in addition to Rob's recommendation above I would also add Pro-Tyre who have a local depot in Fareham. Mike H |

Cheers all Just upset the Kwik Fit man who spent all day getting the extra tyres and I am off to Micheldever to get some Bridgestones - which apparently are the better ones in the wet. Saved £40 too! Should have gone there in the first place! Thanks |

Kevin As you are in Hampshire the best and cheapest place for tyres will be Micheldever Tyres. You will find them hard to beat. Pete |

I just paid £56 for the fronts and £60 for the rear, plus 6.50 per for valves and balancing etc per tyre. I also had the car tracked front and rear and the suspension gas stuff topped up, let out or something (sorry I get in and point the car at high speed - don't need to know how it works.) This added £65 to the bill but its like a different car. Total £324 (sob) I really suggest people get this done - because mine was so far off - the tracking done before at HiQ garages - never go there again - did not work (still had an offset steering wheel after 4 goes at doing the tracking) - I took a front tyre from a little bit worn to no tread whatsoever in 3 months. Its a joy to drive again - although not done the wet yet so we shall see, but it is much firmer in the steering if that makes sense. No shakes, vibrates or anything. Bit worried that they only filled the tyres to 26psi - sounds low - any views? Sorry waffling now - Go to Micheldever - they know what they are talking about! Thanks for all the advice. |

I usually use 28-30psi all round for 15" and 16" wheels - experiment a little and see what you like best Kevin :o) |

Kev While you're having the tyres changed ask Micheldever about changing the tracking. 5mins toe-in at the front and parallel rear is a more progressive combinstion than the MG standard but still safe. Chris |

I have been running Goodyear F1 gsd3 on the front of my F and Goodyear gsd2's on the rear with great handling, now the rears need replacing and F1's are no longer available. Should I go for Toyo Proxes T1s at £52 or Bridgestone RE720's at £66. |

Martin, GY F1 GS-D3s are definitely still available in the correct size (I presume that this is for 16" wheels?) - and the GS-D2s are obtainable, although trickier to find. Personally, as you have F1 GS-D3s on the front already, I'd go for the same tyre at the rear. Both the T-1 and the RE720 are excellent tyres - but if changing to these, it is best practice to replace all four tyres at the same time. HTH |

Michelin Geoff? But yes, you're right about the note 1 - hadn't noticed that; Goodyear F1 GS-D2s are the only type available in the 205/50R15s. If you can afford it, replace all four tyres with either RE720s or Toyo T1-S or T1-Rs (the latter being the latest variant). |

Have a look at the new Avon ZV3. Was a little wary but they were a good price, not scary in the wet, don't know about the longevity. |
