MG MGF Technical - MGF VVC wheel nuts
Help needed fast.Today, having been delayed by 2 weeks because of the vile weather,I managed to do my annual front-rear grovel under the car and to try to grease it a '97 VVC, standard and original OE alloy wheels.Comes to rear drivers side wheel. The nuts for some reason are incredibly tight.Managed to monster the tin outer covers but 2 of the 3 and the security locknut did undo. It's Saturday.I need to get the car to a garage for them to take wheel nut off,BUT first of all I need to source a new set of wheel nuts( well,at least for one wheel.I hate the original tin covered nuts) so can anybody recommend anywhere to get a better( more modern) set that would fit.I would like to replace all 12( the lock nuts are ok). As an aside,I gave up on the greasing .I think the " trefoil" petals in the nozzle-head on my old and well used Tecalemit flexible gun have finally worn away so much they simply are not gripping the grease nipples. It may well be that the nipples themselves are worn as well.Anyone know a good flexible gun to buy,or if it poss to buy just a new nozzle. What sort of lunatic designed that front pass side nipple location just behind the shock absorber? The others aren't much better. Reason for urgency,I was hoping to get to POL next Sat. Thanks folks, any advice welcome |

Mike Satur used to do straight SS wheelnuts, but maybe some more modern F/TF ones from a specialist breaker like: http://www.usedmgtfspares.co.uk I fear all grease guns will be of chinese origin these days... but recommend fitting 45 degree nipples in place of the straight ones! |

Thanks for your advice.I managed to get 3 used nuts for the F yesterday morning courtesy of Phil Wilson at the Welsh MG Centre, Wrexham.Took them back to our friendly neighbourhood tyre place out in the sticks and after much struggle managed to get the wheel off.Dunno why the nuts were so tight. I have e-mailed Mike Satur to see if they do 45deg nipples as I have decided those awful things presently fitted have got to go. |

I bought ten 45 degree nipples on the internet for about £3 posted - a chap in NI - which was much cheaper than driving to the specialist hardware shop! You need to remove the bottom damper bolt to extract the old ones and fit the new, but the annual greasing is a doddle now. |

Charless, the continuing saga about nipples.I took off the existing straight nipple from the rear drivers side this morning, having sorted the nut problem out. Now I used a 7mill tiny socket to get it to move and then carefully removed by hand.Gave it a good clean up.Put it back and ,having cleaned up the grease gun jaws, managed to get plenty of grease in with not much waste. Now when I go to look at the bewildering array of angled nipples available it seems that all are 6mill,8 mill or biggies at 10 mill.Well I was certain I used a 7mm.I have searched for your NI man as a supplier but can't place him.Do you have a record of exactly what you ordered? M6X1MM seems to come up a lot but, of course, you need to know exactly what to order because even if you take a nipple off and take it to a shop they all look so alike that you could easily take the wrong ones and they don't fit the screw hole in the car when you get them home.I wonder if anyone knows the precise measurements/dimensions of those fitted to an F out there. |

They are described as '6mm 45 degree grease nipple', but I cannot find the invoice for the order. The threads are tapered and made of soft metal so beware of overtightening, but it does mean that you can rotate them to a convenient angle give of take 300 degrees! The price has gone up but this should help you do a couple of cars... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/6mm-M6-x-1-45-Degree-Grease-Nipple-Pack-10-/290396460450 |
