MG MGF Technical - More Horses & Cams

My 1.8i has a K&N with an SP exhaust fitted and I want to increase the power, again. I do not want an Icon unit as I am worried about Damaged engines. I was thinking of getting some high lift cams but would like some feedback as to whether they are worth having. They seem to be very expensive as well. I am also worried about whether they make the tick over lumpy and would damage the CAT by passing unburnt fuel into it.

Remove the cat & go with the cams....!

See you Thursday

Steve, checkout Dave Andrew's excellent K-series engine tuning site:

Keep the cat for legal reasons, but modify the head (valves, larger ports), solid lifters and a cam... Very good results can be expected.

Alternativel, a mild fast road cam can be fitted without the need for solid lifters (ideal if you don't fancy the routine maintenance associated with solid lifters).

Steve,

I've had the fast road cams for about 10 months, i can certainly say that the improvement was instant, from the moment i turned the key - deeper inlet roar, and substantial power gain. Also, concerns about lumpy running are unfounded, gone are the days of the old lumpy cams, these run really smooth.

Nick.

Where did you get the conversion done and do you know how much extra horse power it gives.
Steve

Hi Steve,

The improvement on power is about 18Bhp at peak rpm of 5800. Motobuild of Hanworth road Hounslow did the job in around 4 hours!! at a cost of £720.00 with vernier wheels. Like yourself i was concerned about lumpy tickover. But after the work was done i haven't looked back. At the same time i was going to have the cat bypassed, but in all honesty the cost of the bypass was too much for the insubstantial power gain (about 1-2 Bhp). My next project is to get Minister Power (formular 1 development company) of Chatham to 'Blueprint' the engine and upgrade the inlet and exhaust valves but that won't be till after the new year. For that i have been quoted the measley sum of £450.00!!

Really???

Blueprinting won't get you much, better to have the head ported & the valve seats tidied up. Or just persuade Caterham/Minister to sell you one of the 230bhp K-series that they've developed... 9200rpm,
mmmmmmmm!

Mike,

What i meant to say was; in their own words 'get the engineering correct' i assumed this to mean blueprinting. However, the next stage will be valve seats and porting. While i was visiting their facility a must say that i was slightly in awe of a bunch of K's lined up for some meaty converstions!
