MG MGF Technical - MOT Failure - Help please
Hi All. Just found out that my MGF has failed its service/MOT. 48k. Anyone have any ideas on how much to replace a rear suspension socket (whatever that is!) and replace front disks/pads should be? They're planning on charging me £220 for the disks and pads and £38 for the suspension socket rear. Anyone have any suggestions on this please? Cheers, Jon. |

Could do disks/pads DIY for under £60. Don't know about the suspension socket |

I had this good news also a few weeks ago. A socket set is all you need to change the front brake shoes, $40.00 a set for EBC green stuff! There is info on the ultimate MGF site about changing the pads. As for the rear suspension, you need to find out which socket has failed. Both mine had worn out. There is a ball joint on the rear track rod and also one on the top arm. What you need to remove these is again a decent socket set and a ball joint splitter. If however you need to change the top ball joint it is a very large hex head and I had to buy a special socket, Approx £13 and a bloody lot of effort to try and get it off! HTH |

Standard (EBC) front disks: £30 EBC Greenstuff front pads £30 (less dust + better grip!) from spareshq.com (+VAT and a bit for shipping) "rear suspension socket" could also be the bottom shock absorber bush, perhaps? If its one of the other suspension bits, then budget for a 4 wheel alignment. (Worth asking them to point out to you what they were talking about exactly!) Neil. |

Neil, Your correct on that one ask them to show you any problems. The guy drew me a pic showing where the play was, I took it back for the restest and he said there was still play and then promptly pointed out a different part of the suspension! |

Turns out that it requires 1. Front discs and pads (220ukp) 2. N/S Rear Upper Ball Joint (38ukp) Ouch!! This all sounds a bit steep to me.. I've ordered replacement front discs and greenstuff pads from the suggested website. The garage said they would fit them for 102+VAT. We'll just have to see how we go from here. If you are a confident amateur mechanic, you can do the disks and pads yourself. There is lots in the archive. Spareshq.com is a good source of bits. Alternatively, find a good local independent garage. MGF's are nothing special in the braking dept. |

If you are on a budget we stock std front discs (2) and black diamond pads for £80.00 inc vat add a tenner for postage. Ball joints are around £10.00 inc vat.Sorry for the plug but no need to pay too much 8-} Also agree with Brian "MGF's are nothing special in the braking dept." lol. Mike. |

Actually, F suspension isn't anything terribly "special" either: just about any workshop that could handly a Metro could do it (both the F's subframes and front brakes are pure Metro - though the back brakes come from a Rover 800) Neil. |

even if "MGF's were something special in the braking dept" we would still want to buy mikes 'upgrades' |
