MG MGF Technical - Nitrous?

Has anyone out there ever considered fitting a Nitrous kit to their MGF?

I've never seen it mentioned on the board before. A friend of mine has recently modified his Honda CRX (takes it up to Santa Pod) and it got me wondering if anyone has done this to an F.

If you search the archive, i believe someone did manage to do it successfully. not for the fain hearted tho

A standard 1.8 K series could not be expected to last very long under these conditions - it'd be too much stress on the pistons and con rods (they are already close to their safe limits on these engines - and part of the reason why super/turbo charger conversions are so costly for the MGF/Elise).

That reminds me where is RichieR, he should have fitted it to his F by now..

When considering engine modifications, it is wise to remember that the 1.8 K series is effectively a cored out 1.4 lump with a longer stroke. Therefore it is already 'tuned' from the factory.

Whilst this does give excellent benefits with regard to the power to weight ratio, it does somewhat limit what is possible with after market tuning.

Tuning options IMO should begin with maximising the efficiency before working up to things like forced induction, this is the reason that the vast majority of engine modifications available offer < 15 bhp and tend to be limited to small 'bolt on' items like air filters and exhausts. The most expensive thing in this vein you can do is having the head gas flowed, the best value for money item is something like the K+N 57i and the rarest item on an F is the exhaust manifold.

Once you have played with the efficiency of the engine, you are then faced with 4 options, all of which on thier own will put the engine up to it's design limits, they are:

Turbocharging. Not for the faint hearted, this can be done for an extreme amount of money and carries heat dissipation from the engine bay problems.

Supercharging. This is now (according the Elise boys) pretty reliable, but is still horrendously expensive.

N.O.S. Only 1 report of this on the BBS TTBOMK, no feedback yet.

Direct to head multiple throttle bodies. Increase the fueling and air for around £1500.00 to £2000.00, good for around 180 bhp on a 1.8 MPi
