MG MGF Technical - No lights on buzzer and faulty clock

Hi all

Someone at work has just bought an F (typical huh!) that has a couple of niggles I said I'd take a look at.

The two may be connected anyway. The clock doesn't light up and only works occasionally and the lights on buzzer doesn't work.

I haven't taken a look yet and wondered if anyone else had seen anything similar before I start investigating.

Cheers

I'd guess the clock is a blown bulb - it may "make contact" from time to time and hence light.

I'm sure you remember that you can change the oil and clock bulbs through the upper air vent to save the tedious dismanteling (its in the archive - I seem to recall Mike S let the story out...)

Dunno about the lights on warning, though, haven't heard that one before...

If the clock only works when the headlights are on then the wires have been swapped over. An MG main dealer did this to my clock when I had the cooling system repaired. To correct the problem remove the central air vent and then connectt the clock wires up the correct way.

Cheers guys

I think you may be correct Ralph as she says the light never works and the actual clock only works sometimes, could this be when the lights are on I wonder...

Of course, when you've "fixed it", you'll need to test it extensively for a weekend - possibly a trip to southwest of Northampton, eh Richard? :-)

I might have a wiring diagram in my factory workshop manual.

Let me know if Ralphs theory doesn't work.

Hi Lister

Thanks for the offer as I'm in Leeds too. I've actually got a workshop manual and the wiring diagrams (they're different manuals) but didn't have it with me yesterday at work.

Took a look on my F last night and couldn't believe what a doddle it was to remove the centre vents. Simply insert a small flatblade screwdriver at the base of the whole centre vent section and prise it free. A couple of clips unclip and the whole lot just lifts out :-)

As well as being useful for changing bulbs, it could also help when fitting a stereo as you have access to the top of it and can ensure no wires get trapped etc.

Cheers

When the clock ligh doesn't work does the glovebox light work 'cos I believe they are on the same fused circuit?
