MG MGF Technical - No more flat batteries

My F regularly stands in the garage for several weeks in winter without use and unless I remember to charge the battery, the alarm current drain flattens it. This means that batteries last only a couple of years before replacement.

So, I bought an isolating battery terminal which, for space reasons, fits best on to the negative terminal. Two turns of a knob and the battery is disconnected. And all for a fiver!

Obviously I need to lock the doors manually.

If the car is in a garage why not use a battery minder - keeps the battery topped up and you have the alarm on and as a bonus it does not mean you ahve re-input the radio code.

Frost does them - http://www.frost.co.uk/item_Detail.asp?productID=7998&frostProductName=Battery%20Saver

Hi Ted,
the Draper Battery Master
is half the price.

My Optimate from B&G plugs into a fly lead connected under the bonnet and keeps the battery good for 6 months every winter. Just tie a large red ribbon to the steering wheel so that you do not start the car with it still connected

Mike I have one of those as well - it does not maintain the battery as well as a full battery minder such as The Victory or even better still the Optimate which is also a full battery charger.

The Draper or Halfords 'look-alike' will maintain a fully charged battery by giving enough charge to counteract the alarm and clock BUT I think you will find they will not restore a discharged battery to a useable state.

You gets what you pay for in this world Mike - as I am sure you are aware Mike.

Hi Ted,

Looking at the web address you posted, the details of both battery minders look very similar, I would say neither it supposed to be used to restore a flat battery. If you need a full battery charger and minder in one go then the other you mention may well be a good solution.
It would be nice to be nearer my cars to try them out :-)

and yes you only get what you pay but it does not harm to ask why you should pay more for item A than item B, it does not always stand that the more you pay the better the item !, sometimes it just means more profit for someone.

Hows retirement ?
