MG MGF Technical - Noise when changing gear
Could anyone advise please. Occasionally when changing gear from 4th into 5th, I get a clunking sound (ie metal on metal) coming from the gear lever as I move it to the far left, just prior to the forward movement to put into 5th. I have also noticed if I put into neutral and move the stick left to right I get the same noise, occasionally from the right and sometimes the left. Hope my explanation is ok. Would appreciate your thoughts |

Paul, I imagine the counterweight on the end of the gearstick is hitting the side of the tunnel. It is probably just in need of a bit of adjustment. There should be no need to live with the problem. If I were you I'd try to get to an mg specialist. Unfortunately, it looks like you're a long way away fron the usual suspects. |

Fiona and Dave, many thanks for both your comments, glad to see I am not on my own with this, the car is due a service in a couple of months so will ask the local garage to check it out in case it is the counterweight. |

The Trophy I had from new suddenly started doing it when it was a year or so old, but when I raised it as a possible warranty issue I was given the They All Do That Sir response. Never investigated it fully, I presumed that there had been something muffling the noise, but that something had fallen off. |
