MG MGF Technical - Oil Filler Cap

Has anyone experienced a problem with the oil filler cap being very difficult to undo? Even with the minimum amount of force applied when replacing i.e. just enought to ensure a seal without overtightening it is extremely difficult to loosen off again. I've tried cleaning it and using silicon lubricant etc but without success. Doesn't matter whether the engine is hot or cold. Last time I had to use an adjustable spanner applied vertically to the cap to get enough leverage to free it off! (Y reg Trophy)

Thanks - Terry

This is dreadfull Therry

Are you telling me that it isn't just a push in job? The guy at the garage never said anything about it.

Seriously - I've just booked the car in for its first service and I hope Brown & Gammon know more than I do. Two years with previous F and 1 year with this TF and I have never removed the filler cap.

No problem removing or tightening the oil filler cap on my car Terry - so sorry, can't be of any more help than that. Perhaps the thread of the cap/ remote oil filler has been damaged by cross threading in the past?

Hi Terry, having had the TF engine cover off over the weekend I took the opportunity to check the oil filler cap tightness.

It was plesantly tight, but I could still remove it by hand.

Having once 'lost' one from an earlier car I'd say it's better to be tighter than loose.

Interestingly our local dealer mechanic puts new oil in via the cap rather than the dipstick tube.

It's much quicker for him to do a few stokes on a manual pump to draw oil along a flexible tube from a big oil drum and thence into the engine.

btw the my engine cover came off for me to change the air filter - which I could only get from Rover dealer, neither Halfords nor any local motor factors listed F/TF air filters!

Cross threaded maybe?

Mine used to be tight... but I used oil(!) to lubricated it (Ok, I spilled it!!) and it's been ok ever since.
