MG MGF Technical - oil temp increase

after topping my oil up a couple of days ago i have noticed that the oil temp gauge now settles at about 80°c rather than the usual 60°c. is this likely to be a problem do you reckon or am i just being paranoid?

Did you top up with the same type of oil, i.e. you haven't mixed mineral oil with fully synthetic.
Chris

60 seems very low. you say it "settles" at 60, do you mean it reaches 60 after, say, 10 minutes' driving ? On my '96 MPi it used to settle above 90 and on my 2001 VVC it settles at 120. I take it to be the classical difference in calibration of the post-2000 models, so I assume 120 is normal on this car.

60 seems very low.

But the difference in temperature is strange too. Are you sure you didn't overfill? what year is it.

well i’ve had the car for 2.5 yreas now and it’s always been reaching 60°c after about 10 mins driving.

it’s ’96 vvc.

i may have mixed oils and/or i may have slightly overfilled - what difference would this make? i presume one oil will work at a higher temperature than the other?

You should never mix fully Synthetic oil with mineral, if you have done this, I suggest a complete oil change.

Never overfill with oil either, if you have simply overfilled then let some oil drain out via the sump plug.
