MG MGF Technical - One shot window: MY2000 upgrade for Mk1 MGF
Well, thanks to Victoria at the MGF Centre, I got a MY2000 one-shot driver's door window ECU yesterday :o) Fitted it this morning - and fantastic - it works an absolute treat :o)) Shame that there isn't a one-shot up control though. How do you do it (if you're interested): You need: One Window regulator ECU, with plug and a length of the associated wiring loom (obtain from the MGF Centre @ http://www.mgfcentre.com) Chocolate block connector (you'll need 6 available connections)- or you can solder the connections together, and cover the connections in insulating tape etc. I actually made mine reversable using an extra plug and spade connectors - in the event that I needed to change the wiring connections, but happily this wasn't necessary :o) INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Remove the switch panel, and withdraw the plug connector to the RH window switch (red coloured). 2. Cut the following wires: * Grey /green tracer (x2)- connected to terminals 3 and 5 on the red plug * Black - connected to terminal 4 (leave 5-10cm) * Grey /yellow tracer - connected to terminal 1 (leave 5-10cm) * Grey /red tracer - connected to terminal 2 (leave 5-10cm) 3. Bare wire ends, and attach to chocolate block connector. 4. Take ECU loom, and bare wire ends. 5. Connect the wires to the chocolate block, so that: * the grey/ yellow wires are in continuity with the red plug * the grey/ red wires are in continuity with the red plug * twist the black wires from the plug and the ECU, and attach them to the chocolate block so that they are in continuity with the car's loom. * grey/ white wire in continuity with the grey/ yellow wire of the car's loom * grey/ blue wire is in continuity with the grey/ red wire of the car's loom * grey/ green wire of the ECU is in continuity with the two grey/ green wires of the car's loom. Note that the two grey/green wires on the switch plug (terminals 3 and 5) are now redundant). Reassemble, and find somewhere to mount the ECU - and job is complete :o) Works a treat, and I'm delighted. Big thanks to Andy for the inspiration for this surprisingly easy mod! :o)) Happy F-ing! Will get more instructions and pictures uploaded to the net soon :o) Rob |

Rob, well done, youve done it again, roughly how long did it take you to compete the mod? It would be great to have the one click operation but as usual finding the time to actually do it is another task. Look forward to seeing the instructions on your site Les |

Thanks Les :o) It actually didn't take all that long once I figured out how to modify the Mk1 wiring loom to accept the MY2000 window ECU. I mentioned that I made my modification reversible, so fitting it to the car took all of five minutes (but I haven't yet given thought regarding the final location of the ECU, as we had guests round for lunch). Given the time to tin the wires with solder (not strictly necessary) attach connectors and check electrical connections in the 'workshop' - I'd say that the whole thing took about 30 minutes, taking things slowly :o) Not sure how long it'd take to perform this mod as described above for a more permanent solution - but I'd say comfortably less than 30 minutes. As I say, the mod is really straightforward - the only difficult thing was to decide how to rewire the switch, check the switch functions with a multimeter, and determining which wire should attach to what. Even that isn't rocket science! ;o) I just need to take some more pix for the web site - and to finish off locating the ECU - and the job's complete. |

Good work there Rob. |

Nice one Rob, Tim delivered my one on Saturday too :-) There is a picture on the SOS site (the last one on the May 17th gallery) if anyone is interested, there is a part number there too. :-) Usual URL >> http://www.sfforever.co.uk <<, click 'REBUILD' and then select the most recent gallery. Question, Does this only do the driver's side window? (It looks to me like it does from your wiring description). If so, i suppose if i were to purchase a second one i could do the passengerside as well? (just thinking of the tolls in Europe on the Treffen!) ;-) SF |

Woohoo, i'm beginning to get the hang of this internet lark! ;-) Circular links to and from this thread installed and up and running. :-) Not bad for someone in the construction industry. ;-) SF |

Nice one Andy :o) Looks as though you and Tim got a lot of work done on Saturday! :o) |

Yep, although not as much as we intended. We tried to get the heater box out as well, but the brake servo is in the way and we didn't feel it was worth bleeding the brakes just yet. Removed the inner part though, this will be in the next gallery. Only problem i have come accross now, is that as the bonnet is now off the car, when it rains i end up with a 'pond' in the car cover! :-) Not sure what to have a go at next - any suggestions? SF |

Got to get the car rolling so SF can be wheeled into the garage Andy - so how about stripping the nearside suspension assembly, preparing it for reassembly with new (or nearly new ;o)) parts? |

Sadly there is no room in the Garage, all of Scarlet innards are neatly stored there. A couple of ball joints would be an interesting bit to tackle. Shame we didn't pick up your old ones from Techspeed D'oh. It was good fun to help strip scarlet, it's a lot easier when a whole heap of the car isn't there though. |

<<it's a lot easier when a whole heap of the car isn't there though>> Are you calling Scarlet a heap! Neil |
