MG MGF Technical - Only One Exhaust Pipe Workilng

A friend of mine has a nearly new 135 TF,and gas only comes out of the off side - left - exhaust pipe.
The near side pipe has some kind of valve in the pipe on the exhaust side of the muffler. incidently both pipes are connected to the muffler.
We surmised that the valve opened when the engine is working in the higher rev range - no way. After several thousand kilometres the right pipe is still clean.
When idling you can feel a throbbing if you put your hand on the oipe, but no trace of exhaust gas.
Does someone have an explanation for this strange phenominum

have a look underneath there is a strange loking contraption on the right hand exhaust it stops the gases coming out until the revs are lifted

just put there for noise regs I suspect
easily removed

Eric - as per the thread that Tony has linked above - it's because your car has an exhaust valve on that tail pipe to allow the car to pass drive-by noise regulations.

From the above thread:

>> It can be readily disabled - which may have done (Per was one of the first to do this with the TF) - which improves the noise, means that the tail pipes look equally black and some claim an improvement in performance (although when we did this on a rolling road, we could detect no difference whatsoever) - details here: http://www.mgf.ultimatemg.com/group2/exhaust/TF_evc.htm <<

I have a '98 MGF. Does this use the same flap system, or is it only on the newer mgtf? If it does, can it be disabled in the same way??
Mike

Only the TF is fitted with a noise suppession valve.

And the newest TFs have no valve, as found out at Dieters german board, so don't get confused if u see a TF without this valve... :)

Hi,

I think this is what Sven reffers to.
http://www.mgfcar.de/mgtf/index2.htm

In the UK, only the very early had.
Export MGTF had for a longer time until the change to the UNIPART exhaust.
