MG MGF Technical - Painted Mudflaps

I wanted to fit some front mudflaps. These are marketed in the official MGF accessories brochures. However, I've enquired at to dealers and neither recommend getting them painted up body colour. They both say that the apint won't really bond to the rubber and will probably start flaking very quickly. Seems strange when they are so well advertised. The MX5 is sold with colour coded flaps - doesn't seem to be a problem for them. Has anyone had these fitted and did they work OK. Or is there an aftermarket company selling them. If I did get the dealer to fit them, they wanted around £90 for fronts alone. I'm reluctant to fit just black ones when bumpers and everythnig else on the car is colour coded. Experiences please.

Gordon,

I have the painted mudflaps front and rear. I had them fitted from new and the garage only charged me for the mudflaps and not the painting as part of the orginal deal.

Car has done 20k miles in 2 years 1 month. The paint has not flaked but has the odd scuff where they have been rubbed against the curb. While the paint finish is not of the same quality as the body - it is a colour match and to my eye looks a lot better and less obvious than the black rudder alternative.

The car is flame red. The garage was relucant at first but I reminded then that I was the customer...

Do it. I would also suggest flaps all round as the rear wheels can throw up a lot of muck onto the rear of the car without the back flaps.

Cheers

Gordon,

I have been trying to get my mudflaps painted for years, but the dealers I have asked have never come back to me with quotes. I've always put this down to incompetance, which is borne out with all the other work they have done on the car.

I know that painting them is not a straightforward job, I think they have to be treated either before or after painting (or both). But it can be done - loads of MGF's have them.

Brown and Gammons catalogue (page 7) have painted mudflaps for sale at £99.99 inc Vat for all 4 Part number 0442.

Their phone number is 01462 490049

Would it help to protect the mud flaps from stone chipping by covering them in that plastic Armourfend sheeting ?

I doubt that the Armorfend would stick to the rubber of the mudflaps and questionable whether worth the cost as Armorfend is not cheap - got a quote back in 98 - "nose-bra" for the bonnet, front bumper, wing mirrors and headlights came up to about 350 fitted.

I've also had front and back mudflaps painted to match the car (tahiti blue) which was done at the time of ordering and they do look much better than the standard black. In saying that do shop around on prices for painting, the first dealer I went to when initially looking at buying my f wanted £250.00 just to paint the mudflaps plus the cost of the mudflaps -needless to say I didn't order from them.

Thanks guys,
Have ordered four painted flaps from Brown and Gammons. Will pick them up on Saturday and fit on Sunday. Yes they are ready painted with a flexible paint and all four for less than 100 quid. Also B&G are only 20mins away from me. Thanks for the advice.

Most well established paint shops will be able to do this job. The surface needs to be pretreated and I imagine a plasticer will be added to the paint. The actual mudflap is in fact quite rigid compared with some others so I really can't see a problem if the 'Dealer' is left out of the equation.

Pity the mud flaps are not effective. The front ones are near useless as they do not protect the engine air intakes from damage. The outer edge of my air intakes in particular are prone to getting chipped. Does anyone know the solution - would protecting the surface with Armorfend help. Having said that I wrote to Armor over a week ago for some information and they have yet to respond. Not a good sign/advert for their product as far as I am concerned.

Fitted the flaps on Sunday. Excellent kit from B&G. Full fitting instructions and incredibly all the holes lines up which made fitting a very quick and painless job. They certainly look good, and the flexible paint doesn't look like it'll come off. We'll see how effective they are now!

I painted my own mud flaps on a platnium silver VVC. The mud flaps are very easy to paint. Prime them with plastic primer (available from any motor accessory shop) and spray paint them. The only difficult part is the application of clear lacquer. If this is put on too thick the slightest bending of the mud flap will cause it to crack. However even with cracking lacquer the paint does not seem to flake off.
