I'm having a new engine fitted in my 1.8i at the end of this week. It being well over 10 years since i had a car (or engine!) with zero miles i'd appreciate thoughts on the best way to run in a K series engine (or any modern engine)...rev limits for certain mileages etc.....or is that all old hat now?...*smile*

I'm told its a 'bench tested engine'...will it be a good idea to change the oil after a set initial mileage?...is this still done on new MGFs?...(mine had a 3000 mile service with the previous owner).

All help appreciated

Running in of replacement engine..advice needed

You should always treat all new components carefully.
This also applies to brakes, tyres etc.
This is not just for the new component's sake - it also allows you to check that it's been installed correctly.

The new engine should NOT have synthetic oil - this will prevent the bedding-in process. The manual recommends that you keep below 3000 rpm for the first 600 miles, and then increase revs gradually after that. Letting the engine labour in a high gear is also not recommended.

An oil change at 3000 miles may not be strictly necessary, but won't do any harm. It may be required by the engine's warranty. Don't switch to synthetic oil before 12,000 miles.

Just to add to the last. The first oil change will depend on the type of oil that is used. Special running in oils are available and these promote greater contact between materials to assist and speed the bedding in process. If this is used then you need to adhere to the instructions applicable to that oil. If it is normal mineral oil then a change at 3000 mile intervals is not going to do any harm, but a change at bet 5 and 6000 miles is going to be perhaps a better option.

If you do change before the 12,000 mile mark do also avoid the top range non synthetic oils for the same reasons as avoiding synthetics and part synthetics. A middle of the road 10/W40 oil is perfectly OK, and will provide all the protection your engine needs for the (up to) 6,000 mile change intervals.

I have always favoured the 6,000 mile interval for oil and oil filter changes. Modern oils are capable of lasting for long periods without deteriorating as rapidly as older types. However regular changes are still more effective than relying on enhances properties of top grade oils.
