MG MGF Technical - Petrol Fumes When Left Stationary
Hi All, I know there have been threads on this in the past, but wondered what the latest fixes, ideas were. I have a 2000 VGC which has developed the smell over the last few months (68,000 miles). My garage said the petrol tank is not leaking and as its what they call a live petrol tank to look at it they have to replace it (True oe False) they have suggested it is a joint or joints sweating and it should be okay to leave. However since the service the smell has definitely increased. Anyone any thoughts. Many Thanks. |

----- WORDS OF CAUTION ----- We had a similar problem and it was discussed in a thread a couple of months back (Stink of petrol). As a temporary fix we followed the ideas of someone who cured the smell by removing the rubber seal from the filler cap so that the tank did not pressurise. I removed only a section of the seal such that the tank could vent but there was plenty of rubber left to stop the cap rattling. It certainly reduced the smell (leakage). However, on a recent trip to Perpignan when the air temperature was about 35 in the shade we filled up with fuel at an autoroute station and had a leg-stretch and cold drink. WHEN WE RETURNED TO THE CAR FUEL WAS POURING OUT OF THE FILLER CAP AND FLOODING DOWN THE REAR WING MUCH TO THE CONSTERNATION OF A FRENCH BLOKE ENJOYING A GAULOISE CLOSE BY! We assumed that the fuel was cold from underground storage and that the heat of the day and the exhaust system caused it to expand and the gap in the cap seal allowed the overflow. I moved the car such that the nearside wheels were on a kerb which stopped the overflow and had a little think. We decided that the best thing to do was use some fuel so we beggered off at great speed leaving a trace of petrol as we went. I WOULD SUGGEST THAT REMOVING OR CUTTING THE TANK SEAL IS A VERY DANGEROUS THING TO DO AND, YES, I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT BEFORE I DID IT. Adam |

Cured the same problem last week on my '95 'F'. The breather pipe from the fuel pump was partially blocked! Simple fix. Unfortunately, I think it had been that way for some time before I bought the car, so the smell had permeated into the upholstery, especially the carpet! This is now cured with the help of a can of '1001 No-Vac carpet freshener', now on sale in the UK. Car now smells sweet (if a little 'Gay')!!!!! |
