MG MGF Technical - petrol leakage from cp and petrol smells

i have just brought a auto mgtf and on filling the tank the petrol decided to pump out of the tank all over the floor. Next day after 40 miles it decided to leak out of the petrol cap down the car. Went to dealers who said no vacum when removing cap --cap replaced --still same problem there is no vacum noise when removng cap. Also smells of petrol most of the time, back to dealer -stated - never heard of problem, Can anyone give me any ideas,
Thanks

The first time I filled my 1998 VVC with petrol last year, I ended up with a huge puddle under the car flowing out of the petrol cap and down the bodywork. This didn't happen immediately, but by the time I had paid at the kiosk. I assumed it was because I had overfilled it and the car was warm causing the petrol to vapourise and expand. Now I never completely fill the car, this also saves time as its such a nuisance that the pump clicks off all the time-except Sainsbury's pump 9 (If I recall correctly?)

P Bowley,

Petrol filling problems and the smell of petrol are well known problems in MGFs (mostly early ones I think). I'm surprised your dealer didn't know about this. Just noticed that it's a steptronic that you have so it can't be that old. I'd get back and tell him that there is a problem with the car and you want it fixed. If you really want to find out more about this problem have a look in the archives.

Elaine,

Have you got your car back from MS yet?

There could be a relation to the purge valve.
Could be...IMO... not must.

On the other hand the problem due to filling may relate to kinked hoses. Breather hose in this case.

If its new (as you mention a TF) and they've replaced the cap, then it sounds like something else either isn't joined properly (some of the pipework), or one of the seams in the tank isn't right.

Early tanks had problems with the seams, but that has been sorted now - so if it is one, its problably a "one-off".

Persevere with the dealer - you shouldn't get petrol smells!
